Fabian Delph could be a good signing for Everton

According to the BBC, Everton are close to completing a deal worth around £8.5million for versatile Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph. The former Leeds star has just one-year left on his contract with the Citizens.

The Toffees look set to pull off a bargain buy, as Delph has a wealth of experience of winning major trophies with the men from Manchester.

Is a good solid professional

Fabian Delph is, first of all, a good professional footballer, who has played a role in City success over the past few years. Although not a star player, Delph has always done a decent job, wherever he has been asked to play.

A good example of his good attitude was when City boss Pep Guardiola converted him into a left-back. He did the job without much fuss and helped his team out when they needed it.

The fact that a boss such as Guardiola rates him so highly says a lot about his character and his attitude. Delph is also reportedly a strong figure in the City dressing room, which only bodes well for success on Merseyside.

At this stage of his career, a switch to an Everton side looking to challenge for a top-six spot next season looks like a good one. He gets to remain in the north west and will play for a team with big ambition.

A different sort of signing

While Everton have been linked with expensive moves for highly-rated young players such as Barcelona’s Malcom and Juventus’ Moises Kean, signing Delph is a very different signing.

The main man when it comes to transfers at Everton director of football Marcel Brands has a very particular transfer policy. The Dutchman will target up and coming players who have a sell on value in the future.

However, this move is a shrewd one on the part of the Toffees hierarchy. Not every signing can be a big-money promising young superstar in the making. The Merseysider’s have a relatively young squad, so adding an experienced player like Delph to the squad makes sense.

He is the sort of player who will do the dirty work and be a voice of reason in the dressing room too. No doubt he is not the most glamorous signing. However, some have made comparisons to when the Toffees signed Gareth Barry from City. He was heading towards the end of his career but proved to be an outstanding player for the Merseysider’s.

Everton still need more additions

The signing of Delph will be a step in the right direction for the Toffees. However, to achieve their objective of a top-six finish next season, then they will have to make a few more additions to their squad.

Brands is famous for his abilities in scouting and getting value for money. The Dutchman will be working hard behind the scenes to give boss Marco Silva the best chance he has to achieve success in the near future.

Silva has already stated he believes the Merseysider’s will make four-five new additions this summer. It seems that Delph could be the first of those signings.
