Montpellier v Lyon preview, prediction and odds

|

On Tuesday evening, Lyon will look to continue their hundred per cent record in Ligue One this season when they visit Montpellier. The home side faces a difficult task in gaining their first league win of the season.

Montpellier (Odds of 11/4 for victory)

Montpellier heads into this potentially tricky clash as slight underdogs for victory. The home side has kicked off the new league campaign by picking up just one point from a possible six.

Michel Der Zakarian started the campaign with a 1-0 defeat at Rennes before drawing 1-1 Bordeaux last time out. The poor start to the 2019/20 season means that Montpellier have now failed to win in four Ligue One games dating back to last season.

Their recent matches in the French top-flight have also been tight, low-scoring affairs, as there has been under 2.5 goals scored in their last six league outings. The fact the home side has managed just one goal in their last three league outings has contributed to that stat.

Montpellier have been inconsistent on home soil in Ligue One. However, they have now failed to win in their last three league outings at home. The 1-0 opening day defeat did end a six-game undefeated home run for Montpellier in Ligue One.

They have also been relatively prolific at the Stade de la Mosson in Ligue One of late, scoring at least two goals in seven of their last ten outings.

Lyon (Odds of evens for victory)

Lyon have started the new campaign in fine fashion by winning both of their games so far. An opening weekend 3-0 win at Monaco proceeded a 6-0 home hammering of Angers last Friday. The games just summed-up Lyon’s sheer attacking potency.

Both Moussa Dembele and Memphis Depay have scored three goals in those first two league matches. OL’s lethal finishing will have come as little surprise to anybody, as the visitors have now scored at least twice in their last eight Ligue One outings.

The visitors have also been solid at the other end of the pitch, keeping four clean sheets in their last five league games, conceding just one goal in the process.

Lyon head to Montpellier with a good recent away record in Ligue One too, having picked up four straight away wins. OL have also scored three goals in each of those four games on their travels.

Prediction

This could be a long night for out of sorts Montpellier. Lyon have started the season like a freight train. The likes of Depay and Dembele will be highly confident of adding to their goal tallies in this clash.

However, the home side are not terrible on their own patch. They tend to keep it tight at the back. Lyon look set for the win, but backing the under 2.5 goals at odds of 10/11 may just prove a decent punt too.

Verdict: Back the Lyon win at evens and/or under 2.5 goals at 10/11 (all odds taken from Bet365)
