Arsenal are interested in signing Chelsea forward Tammy Abraham, according to the Daily Express. The Blues reportedly value the 23-year-old at around the £40m mark. However, some reports claim that the Gunners could sign Abraham on loan with an obligation to buy him next summer.

Abraham has fallen down the striking pecking order at Stamford Bridge since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel. He appeared in just eight top-flight games in the second half of the campaign, despite being the Blues top scorer before the departure of Frank Lampard.

Not going to develop at Chelsea

There seems to be very little doubt about Abraham’s potential to become a very good top-flight striker. However, he cannot afford to sit things out at Chelsea. At such a key stage of his development, he needs to be playing regular football at the top level.

During his time at Chelsea and a loan spell at Aston Villa, Abraham has shown that he is more than capable of making an impact and scoring goals at a high standard of the game. The striker scored 15 goals in season 2019/20 for the Blues, helping his team to qualify for the Champions League.

Chelsea looking to sell players to buy

It is quite obvious now that Thomas Tuchel is not convinced by Abraham’s ability to lead the Blues line in the long term. Chelsea are reportedly looking at other striking targets, including Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Dortmund starlet Erling Haaland.

However, those forward targets will certainly not come cheap and like every club, they have been affected by Covid. The Blues have already sold Olivier Giroud, Victor Moses and Fikayo Tomori to raise transfer funds and lower the wage budget.

The sale of Abraham for the mooted fee would likely be put towards bringing in a new forward, although that would not apply if the Blues won’t receive the fee until next summer. Selling the forward would make sense if he is only going to be a bit-part player once again this season.

Abraham and Arsenal could be an ideal match

The new season is a big one for Arsenal and head coach Mikel Arteta. Last season it was a case of one step forward two steps back at times. The Gunners were inconsistent, as they shone in some games and periods of the season, only to struggle at other times.

One factor in their inconsistency last season was that they were not exactly prolific in front of goal. Only Everton scored fewer goals than Arsenal of the teams that finished in the Premier League’s top 11 last season. That relatively low goal tally was despite having the attacking talents of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in their squad. They scored just 23 Premier League goals between them, which by past standards is a poor return. Both players look to be at the back end of their careers.

Abraham on the other hand seems to be a hungry young player who is looking to develop. With services from the likes of emerging young talents such as Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith-Rowe, he could prosper if starting regularly. The move is far from complete. However, Tammy Abraham moving to Arsenal could well be a move that suits all parties involved.
