Reports from a number of UK-based news outlets yesterday claimed that Premier League Aston Villa are interested in Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey. Bayer value the Jamaican star at around £30million, which could be an absolute bargain.

Bailey has impressed in the Bundesliga in Leverkusen and in a non-covid transfer market would no doubt cost far more than the mooted fee. However, the Villans are not the only English club reported to be interested in signing Bailey, as Everton are believed to have a long-term interest in the star.

His stats were decent in an inconsistent Leverkusen team

Bayer Leverkusen lived up to their reputation for inconsistency last season. However, Bailey’s stats in the German top-flight were still decent, as he scored nine goals and produced eight assists. If there is one thing that the 23-year-old needs to improve it is his consistency. His relative tender years means that he has plenty of time to become more consistent. He certainly improved upon his tangible output last season, as he played more games for his club.

All the attributes to succeed in the Premier League

Leon Bailey is the sort of winger who gets fans off the seats their seats. His main attributes are his pace and his ability to meet a player. He is almost a throwback to the old-fashioned wingers that appeared in the English top-flight in the past.

The 23-year-old’s versatility is also a major asset, as he can play on either wing, as a number ten or even as a central striker. That versatility can be crucial to teams, as it gives coaches options. In the attacking areas of the pitch, it is arguably even more crucial.

Villa in pole position to complete a deal

Aston Villa have already strengthened their attacking options this summer by bringing in Argentinian playmaker Emiliano Buendia from Premier League new boys Norwich. It seems head coach dean smith is still keen to add to his forward options. There is also still speculation that star player Jack Grealish could leave this summer.

The Villans are reportedly in pole position ahead of Everton, as the Toffees are currently juggling their finances to bring in quality additions. Ironically, they have just tied up a deal to sign Bailey’s Bayer Leverkusen teammate Demarai Gray. The signing of the former Leicester player may mean that signing a winger may not be the Merseysider’s priority this season, as they are believed to also be looking to add a right-back to their squad ahead of the campaign.

The Toffees dealing this summer are tied by the fact that they have a host of high-earning players on their wage bill. That means that need to offload players in the near future, with Brazilian playmaker Bernard already close to an exit.

Whether Bailey joins Villa, Everton or any other Premier League team, he looks like he has everything a player needs to be successful in England’s top-flight.
