So, Everton are on the hunt for yet another new head coach after the departure of former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez. The Spaniard lasted just over six months in the job. It turned out to be a disastrous appointment.

It was never going to work. However, reportedly majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri decided to ignore the fans disapproval of the fans even some of his own club’s board. The result was yet another half a season wasted and a possible relegation battle.

The next boss has a big job on their hands attempting to revive the fortunes of one of the elder statesmen of the English game. Here are some of the candidates for the vacancy:

Roberto Martinez

The Spaniard is the favourite to return to the club he left in 2016. The Toffees sacked the now-Belgium national team head coach after two poor seasons in charge. Martinez was the first head coach to face the axe under majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri.

It would be a surprising turn of events for Martinez to return to the Merseyside club. It would be another divisive appointment by the club, which is the last thing the team needs right now.

Duncan Ferguson

The Scot is an Everton hero and has been on the clubs coaching staff since 2014, including most lately being the assistant to Rafa Benitez. His appointment would certainly get the majority of backing from the fans, although his lack of managerial experience is a bone of contention.

He has previously enjoyed a brief four-game stint in charge that saw his team beat Chelsea and draw with Manchester United, Arsenal and Leicester. The fans would certainly be behind the team with ‘Big Dunc’ in charge. Ferguson is likely to be in charge of this weekend’s home game with Aston Villa,

Wayne Rooney

While he is an Everton academy product, Rooney left the men from Merseyside for a trophy-laden spell at Manchester United as a player. He did return towards the end of his career, but by then his best days were behind him.

Rooney moved into coaching a year ago with Derby and has done an impressive job in highly difficult circumstances. Despite leaving for United early in his career, Rooney is an Evertonian and has never hidden his love for his boyhood club.

His love of the club and previous link with the men from Merseyside would certainly mean that Rooney would get major backing from the supporters.

Nuno Espirito Santo

The Portuguese head coach is now unemployed after an ill-fated spell at Tottenham. His unsuccessful stint at Tottenham and a poor final campaign at Wolves has rather tainted the good work he did at Molineux in winning promotion and turning his team into a top-half team in the Premier League.

Reportedly Everton considered Nuno for the vacancy in the summer. However, instead, he ended up in north London. The former Valencia boss would not be a popular appointment amongst the now fed-up Evertonian’s.

Frank Lampard

The former England international is reportedly interested in the job. The club from Merseyside are also aware of his availability. Lampard is another who impressed as head coach of Derby in the Championship. He then moved on and took Chelsea to fourth-place before being replaced by Thomas Tuchel with Chelsea ninth-place in the table.

Opinion on Lampard seems to be split. However, he would no doubt be a far more popular appointment than Roberto Martinez or Nuno.

Must be the right appointment

The Everton hierarchy must get this appointment right or the Toffees could be in for a very real relegation dogfight for the rest of the season. They end the season with a tough run of fixtures, so the new man must make a fast start or this season could end in disaster for Everton.
