On Tuesday, Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp was named Premier League Manager of the season. The award was hotly contested, but the Reds boss beat off competition from Pep Guardiola and Eddie Howe to claim the coveted prize.

Why did Klopp win the award?

The German won the award because his Liverpool team pushed champions Manchester City all the way in the title race. The men from Merseyside eventually finished a point behind the much-lauded champions and took the fight to the final day.

Although it is an award for a manager’s performance in the Premier League, the fact that the Reds have won the FA Cup and League Cup this season will also have affected voting. There could be more to come yet for Klopp and his team this season, as, on Saturday night, Liverpool faces Spanish champions Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Klopp has transformed Liverpool’s fortunes

The former Dortmund head coach has transformed Liverpool’s fortunes since joining the club in 2015. He has brought his particular style of football to the club, and the players seem to buy into their boss’s football ideology. Klopp has that ability to make players really want to play for him, and that is one of the keys to his success on Merseyside.

They will give everything for their charismatic head coach, and that certainly seems to have paid off in the number of games and trophies that Liverpool has won in recent seasons. With the Champions League final looming, Klopp and his team will be confident of adding a seventh European Cup to their recent trophy horde.

Klopp has established a reputation as one of the Premier League’s best ever bosses in recent years. There are no signs that he is done just yet at Anfield, and he is sure to be back challenging for the English top-flight next season.

Other bosses that deserve credit

While Klopp won the award, there are obviously other head coaches in the Premier League that deserve massive credit. The most obvious is title-winning Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola. The Catalan boss has helped the Citizens to win four titles in five years. The former Barcelona head coach maybe does not get the credit he deserves for all his team’s successes because of the way that the Citizens have spent big in the transfer market in recent years.

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe is another head coach who has come out of this season with immense credit. When the former Bournemouth boss arrived in the north east, the Magpies looked resigned to life in the Championship next season.

After a poor start to life at Newcastle, Howe guided his team to a nine-game unbeaten streak in the first three months of 2022, a run including six wins and three draws. The run moved Newcastle into mid-table safety and helped the club with big ambitions maintain their status in the top-flight of English football. To a lesser extent than Guardiola, Howe did receive good backing in the transfer market in the January transfer window.

Whether you agree with the choice of Klopp as the Premier League’s best boss or not, what the German has achieved is admirable.
