For all the wrong reasons, one of the most memorable incidents of Euro 2020 was Christian Eriksen collapsing due to a cardiac arrest in a 1-0 defeat by Finland. The midfielder was technically dead for three to four minutes. However, thanks to brilliant work from the medical staff at the game that day, a year on, things look a lot more positive for the midfielder.

After initial fears that Eriksen would not play again, the midfielder is again a man in demand this summer.

A break from the game

Due to specific rules in Serie A, Christian Eriksen could not play for club team Inter with an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) fitted. The Nerazzurri were understandably gracious in allowing the Denmark international to rescind his contract and move on.

After initialling considering retiring from the game, Eriksen then spent two months training with former club Ajax to gain fitness and be sure that he was fully recovered from the incident on June 12th 2021.

Brentford sign Eriksen in the January transfer window

The Danish international found a new club at the end of the January transfer window, as Premier League Brentford signed the midfielder on a six-month contract.

Compatriot and Bees boss Thomas Frank broke Eriksen in gently and left it until the end of the month before giving the midfielder his debut. This time allowed Eriksen to settle into his new surroundings and get to know his teammates.

The Bees comfortably maintained their Premier League status, with Eriksen proving an influential figure for them. In 11 top-flight appearances, the 30-year-old scored once and produced four assists.

However, his influence on the team was far more significant than just his assists or goals, as he was highly influential in the mid of the park. Often, he was allowed to roam and create from deeper positions.

His short stint at Brentford proved to the world that Eriksen was still capable of performing at the top level. Before his switch to Inter in 2021, Eriksen was one of the leading goals providers in the English top flight. While he may not be back to his best Premier League levels, Eriksen is still an outstanding player on his day.

In demand this summer

Eriksen’s performances and the fact that he is a free agent this summer have inevitably led to interest from other clubs. The Bees are understandably keen to keep their talented midfielder. Reportedly, they have offered him a new two-year deal to stay.

However, former-club Tottenham, Manchester United and Everton have also been linked with signing Eriksen. He is indeed a player in demand this summer, which is incredible to think about after last year’s notable event.

Some reports suggest that Eriksen wants to stay in the capital, which would put Spurs in pole position to sign the midfielder. Others claim that he also wants to play Champions League football, which only Tottenham can provide out of the reported quartet of admirers can provide. Other reports suggest that Eriksen wants a guarantee of first-team football, as he wants to be sharp for the start of the World Cup in November.

The fact that Eriksen has returned so strong to football is a testament to everybody involved in the player’s recovery and Eriksen’s strength as a person. Wherever the midfielder ends up playing in the new season, we are sure he will thrive. He has completed a fantastic turnaround, and his is an incredible story.
