Media reports suggest that Tottenham and Chelsea are both keen to sign Everton’s Brazilian international forward, Richarlison, this summer. The Toffees are believed to value Richarlison at around £60million. However, whether either London clubs are willing to meet the asking price remains to be seen.

Acceptance that Richarlison will leave

Although Richarlison is a fan’s favourite at Everton, there is an acceptance that the forward will have to leave this summer. The acceptance is because of the club’s poor position regarding FFP. Awful recruitment and terrible decisions have led the Toffees into a financial spot that could lead to fines and the threat of points deductions. The club seem unlikely to spend money before the end of the tax year, which for Everton is 30th June.

With that date approaching, Everton is expected to sell Richarlison before that date in order to balance the books and help their FFP situation.

Money must be reinvested wisely

Richarlison may not be the only player to leave this summer. The likes of Yerry Mina, Allan and Andre Gomes have also been linked with summer moves, which would once again add to the club’s potential transfer budget.

One key to making the most of the money brought in is wise investment in strengthening the team and potentially squad. In the past, Everton has wasted hundreds of millions on overhyped and overvalued players. The job of the club’s new director of football Kevin Thelwell and, to a certain extent, head coach Frank Lampard is to recruit better than their predecessors.

Everton has been linked with moves for several players. Reports suggest that they are interested in Watford’s Nigerian international forward Emmanuel Dennis, Tottenham’s Harry Winks and Oleksandr Zinchenko. Reports suggest that all three players are keen on the switch to Goodison Park.

The players seem to have the right profile, as all three are in their mid-twenties and have experience in the Premier League. However, there are doubts about Wink’s and his ability to thrive after his underwhelming career at Spurs.

The Toffees have already secured centre-back James Tarkowski on a free transfer. The deal looks good. He came with no fee and will add steel to the Toffees backline, which was so vulnerable last season.

A need for a major improvement next season

The team has gone backwards for all the spending Everton has done in the Farhad Moshiri era. Last season was the nadir for the Toffees, as the men from Merseyside narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship.

Head coach Frank Lampard needs to show he has the managerial acumen to improve Everton next season. No doubt the Toffees squad is not great. However, Lampard needs to try and get the best out of the players available to him.

No doubt there will be new arrivals, and the squad will look very different to last season. However, there needs to be a significant improvement from everybody employed by the club. The Toffee’s loyal and passionate fanbase deserves more than they have given in recent seasons.

The majority of fans are realistic, though. They know that next season could be a difficult one, especially without a significant recruitment drive.
