Atletico Madrid v Juventus preview, prediction and odds

One of the biggest matches in the gameweek one of the new Champions League campaign is Atletico Madrid hosting Juventus at the Wanda Metropolitano in Group D of Europe’s elite competition.

Atletico Madrid (Odds of 11/8 for victory)

Atletico Madrid have been a familiar name in the latter stages of the Champions League in recent years. In fact, Los Rojiblancos have made it to the knockout stages of the competition in seven of their previous nine campaigns.

Ironically, last season Diego Simeone’s side suffered a 3-2 aggregate defeat against Juventus in the last-16. Atletico have enjoyed the upper hand in Champions League ties with the Bianconeri, winning two, drawing one and losing just once.

The one defeat came in a crucial 3-0 defeat in Turin. They have won both their home games with the team from Turin on home soil. The Spanish side are strong on home soil against any visitor in European competition, as they won their last nine matches on home soil in European football’s major competitions while conceding just once in that stellar home run of form.

Former Juventus striker Alvaro Morata is unlikely to figure for the visitors due to injury. The striker played in Turin from 2014 to 2016 before returning to boyhood club Real Madrid.

Juventus (Odds of 23/10)

Rather unusually for Juventus, the Bianconeri head into this clash as slight underdogs for victory. Their aggregate victory over the home side will mean very little in this clash.

Maurizio Sarri’s team will be hoping to improve on last season, as they exited the Champions League at the quarter-finals stage, shocked by surprise-package Ajax in the last eight.

Juventus went out and strengthened their squad with Ajax’s star centre-back Matthijs de Ligt in an effort to improve their hopes of landing the European Cup for only the third time in their illustrious history.

The visitors have a strong record of reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League, reaching the last 16 of the competition in 16 of the last 19 seasons.

Despite their strong displays in Europe, the Italian champions have struggled on their travels of late in the Champions League, failing to win in their last three European matches on their travels.

However, Juventus have a good recent record against Spanish teams in Europe, winning four of their last five meetings with teams from Spain. The odd one out being the defeat by Atletico.

Star forward Cristiano Ronaldo also has an outstanding record against Atletico Madrid in Europe, having scored seven goals in eight matches against the home side.

These two teams are favourites to make the knockout stages of the Champions League. The clashes between the pair are likely to decide to finishes top of the group and therefore gets a so-called comfortable draw for the knockout stages.

There is a big case to be made for a home win. Atletico are so strong on home soil, especially in the Champions League, while Juventus have been travel sick of late in the competition. We are backing the home win at odds of 11/8.

The other bet we are taking an interest in is the under 2.5 goals scored. Considering Atletico’s home record in defence, the under 2.5 goals at 1/ 2 looks like a shrewd investment.

Verdict: Back the home win at odds of 11/8 and/or the under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 1/ 2. (All odds from taken from Bet365).
