On Tuesday night, Switzerland host the Republic of Ireland in Geneva, in a potentially pivotal clash in Group D of qualifying for Euro 2020.
Switzerland (Odds of 11/20 for victory)
Nations League semi-finalists Switzerland currently find themselves third-place in the group after a 1-0 defeat by Denmark last time out. The defeat means that the home side are now four points behind Tuesday’s opponents and also Denmark in the fight to secure one of the two automatic qualification spots. Switzerland’s only saving grace may be that they have a game in-hand on the pair at the top of the group.
Switzerland’s recent form has been of major concern, as home team have won just once in their last six outings in all competitions. However, the defeat in Denmark ended a six-game unbeaten run in qualifying for the European Championships, with their previous qualifying defeat coming in 2015 in England.
The home side has a strong recent home record in qualifying for the European Championships, as they are unbeaten six matches, recording five wins in the process. The home team has also been highly prolific on home soil in qualifying, scoring at least three times in that six-game unbeaten run. They have also kept five clean sheets in their last eight qualifiers on home soil.
Republic of Ireland (Odds of 11/2 for victory)
The Republic of Ireland have enjoyed a solid qualification campaign so far and top the group. They are currently level on points with Denmark and looking in a strong position to qualify for Euro 2020.
A goalless draw in Georgia last time out means that Mick McCarthy’s team are unbeaten in Group D. In fact, the visitors are undefeated in eight qualifiers for the European Championships dating back to 2015.
However, the Republic have drawn three of their last four qualifiers. Their recent qualifiers have been tight, low-scoring affairs with under 2.5 goals scored in ten of their last 11 qualification games.
Ireland have enjoyed a mixed recent away record in qualifying for the European Championships, as they have won just two of their last eight matches on their travels. However, they are unbeaten in four away matches in qualifying, having three and won one of those four outings.
Unsurprisingly, considering Ireland recent history of low-scoring games, their last four away qualifiers have produced under 2.5 goals. They will need to mount a stout defensive display to keep out the prolific Swiss attack though.
Switzerland head into this clash as favourites for the victory. However, the visitors have proven to be a stubborn team to defeat. Mick McCarthy’s team are definitely more than a sum of their individual parts. We can see this game being a tight one, with the visitors approaching the clash in a pragmatic manner.
We do believe that Switzerland will grind out the win, but that it will be by a very narrow margin. A Swiss win would put them right back in the picture for qualification for Euro 2020.
Verdict: Back the home win at odds of 11/20 and/or the under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 8/13 (All odds are taken from Bet356).[reviewTableLarge ids=”620,639,642″ title=”Best betting sites to place bet on this game are:”]
