Burnley v Chelsea preview, prediction and odds

Burnley will attempt to upset established order when they clash with Chelsea at Turf Moor in what should make for an entertaining clash of styles.

Burnley (7/2)

Inconsistency is the key when describing what kind of a team Burnley are in the realms of the modern day Premier League. They can beat the big boys one week and then drop points the next, all the while not really causing much of a stir at either end of the table. In their last six games they’ve won two, drawn two and lost two, which echoes the point perfectly. The two losses were nothing to be ashamed about against Leicester and Liverpool, with the Villa and Brighton games both ending in a stalemate. When going up against Everton and Norwich, though, they were strong and resilient in securing the three points.

Burnley don’t tend to blow teams out of the water too much and they seem to gradually be fixing their defensive woes. As such, the under 2.5 goals barrier seems more appropriate.

Chelsea (8/11)

Frank Lampard has injected new life into this Chelsea team in a big way since arriving from Derby County in the summer. Due to their transfer ban he has been forced to rely on what they’ve got, and as it turns out, what they’ve got is pretty good. They battered Grimsby Town 7-1 in the Carabao Cup, and in the Champions League, they secured two tight but deserved victories over Ajax and Lille. They were consistent in the Premier League, too, with wins over Brighton, Southampton and Newcastle – scoring seven and conceding just once in the process.

While the Grimsby and Southampton results may suggest otherwise, Chelsea are involved in a lot of tight games more often than not, which helps us lean towards under 2.5 goals being scored here.

Burnley are going to cause Chelsea problems, especially just a few short days after they traveled to Ajax in the Champions League. We can absolutely picture a scenario in which the Blues just run out of energy following a tough return from the international break, allowing the Clarets to exploit them. We don’t think Sean Dyche’s men will get the three points, but we’re going to stick our neck out on the line and suggest that we will see a draw in Lancashire this weekend.

While Chelsea have a tendency to be quite free scoring at times we just can’t get the idea of this being 1-1 out of our head. Therefore, we’re going for under 2.5 goals, but don’t allow that to cloud your judgement. While there many not be a goal every five minutes, this one still has the potential to be a really entertaining game.

Verdict: Back the draw at odds of 3/1 and the under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 6/5. (All odds are taken from bet365).
