Liverpool v Arsenal preview, prediction and odds

On Wednesday night, Liverpool host Arsenal at Anfield in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, in one of the biggest ties of the round.

Liverpool (Odds of 5/6 for victory)

The Premier League leaders head into this game on the back of seven wins in their last eight games in all competitions. The only defeat Jurgen Klopp’s team has suffered this season came in a 2-0 defeat at Napoli in the Champions League.

One noticeable difference in Liverpool from last season is that their defence has not been as solid as last season. In fact, the Reds have not kept a clean sheet in their last five matches in all competitions, resulting in both teams scoring in all five games.

They have also failed to keep a clean sheet in all six of their matches on home soil this season in all competitions. These stats are of course negated by Liverpool’s awesome attacking threat, as the Merseysider’s have scored at least two goals in all six of their home games this season.

Liverpool have a poor recent record in the League Cup, losing four of their last five matches in the competition. The Reds also have a poor recent home record in the League Cup winning just two of their last five matches on home soil.

With winning the Premier League title the Reds priority, boss Klopp is likely to rotate his squad for this clash, with a number of their star players likely afforded a rest.

Arsenal (Odds of 3/1 for victory)

The Gunners head into this clash under a cloud. Unai Emery’s side threw away a two-goal lead at home against Crystal Palace last time out to draw 2-2. The game involved a controversial incident in which captain Granit Xhaka voiced his frustration to his own booing fans by using profanities. The Swiss international is unlikely to feature in this clash.

The draw against the Eagles was part of a mixed run of form for the north London side. However, Emery’s team has suffered just one defeat in their last 11 matches in all competitions. The Spaniard is still under immense pressure, though, with media reports suggesting that his job is in danger.

The Gunners have a decent recent record of late in the League Cup. They have won four of their last six League Cup games, with five of those last six games being on home soil. The visitors have an unconvincing recent away record in this competition, winning two of their last five matches on their travels in the League Cup.

Like their hosts, Arsenal head coach Emery could make changes to his starting line-up for this clash. Brazilian youngster Gabriel Martinelli could start up front after impressing in the last round of the Carabao Cup.

It will be difficult to predict the outcome of this clash until the two starting line-ups are announced. However, we are backing the home win at odds of 5/6, as they could still name a strong line-up even when resting players.

Games between these two teams have been high-scoring down the years, so we are also backing the over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 1/ 2, which is not terrific value. However, it offers a seemingly safe bet for a difficult game to predict.

Verdict: Back the home win at odds of 5/6 and/or over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 1/ 2 (All odds taken from Bet 365).
