On Saturday night, Croatia and Slovakia go head-to-head in Group E of qualifying for European Championships. The clash could well define who qualifies for next years tournament.

Croatia (Odds of 4/9 for victory)

The World Cup finalists are currently top of the group. However, they are just two points ahead of second-place Hungary and four points clear of Saturday’s opponents, who have played a game fewer than their hosts. A home victory would seal Croatia’s place at Euro 2020.

Croatia heads into this game unbeaten in five European Championships qualifiers. However, last time out, Wales held Zlatko Dalic’s team to a 1-1 draw. The result against the Dragons means that five of Croatia’s last seven matches in qualifying has seen both teams score.

They have never lost a European Championship qualifier on home soil, which is a record that spans 34 matches and 25 years. The home side has won seven of their last eight home qualifiers while scoring at least twice in all seven victories.

The home side recorded a 4-0 thumping of Slovakia in the reverse fixture and will be confident of recording another win in their final group game in qualifying.

Slovakia (Odds of 13/2 for victory)

The visitors have been inconsistent of late in qualifying, winning just two of their last five outings in qualification for Euro 2020. Last time out, Wales held the visitors to a 1-1 draw. The result could yet prove fatal to the visitor’s chances of making next years tournament and ended a run of high-scoring games in qualifying for Slovakia, as their previous three outings had produced over 2.5 goals in each.

Slovakia have not just been inconsistent in the current campaign. They have won just four of their last ten qualifiers dating back to 2015.

The visitors recent away record in qualifying is decent, as they have won six of their last eight away matches in qualifying, including their last two games against Azerbaijan and maybe crucially Hungary. The fact that Slovakia have scored at least two goals in five of their last seven away matches has been a big factor in their recent good results away from home in qualifying.

The visitors know that if they suffer a defeat in this clash that their chances of qualifying for Euro 2020 may have ended. It is a tough task they have on their hands attempting to make history, though.

Conclusion

A point will be good enough to see Croatia book their place at Euro 2020. However, they are a formidable opponent on home soil and we are backing the home win at 4/9, which is not great odds. However, we are also backing the both teams to score at odds of 11/10, as it looks like a tempting one.

Verdict: Back the home win at odds of 4/9 and/or both teams to score at odds of 11/10. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
