Prediction and odds for the game: Newcastle (4/1) v Leicester (4/6)

We are back the away win

When: 1st January 2020, Kick-off 3 PM

Where: St James Park

On Wednesday afternoon, Newcastle United host Leicester City at St James Park, as the Foxes look to consolidate second spot in the table.

Newcastle

The Magpies head into this potentially difficult encounter on the back of three defeats in their last four Premier League outings. Last time out in the English top-flight, Steve Bruce’s team suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Everton. The defeat saw the team from the north east slip into the bottom half of the table.

Boss Bruce is supposedly a pragmatic boss, but his team has been less than stellar in defence of late, keeping just one clean sheet in their last five Premier League outings.

The aforementioned defeat against Everton ended a run of eight games without a home defeat in the Premier League for the Magpies. In fact, it was only their second home loss of the season in the English top-flight. Despite those reasonably good results on home soil in the Premier League, the home side has kept just two clean sheets in their last 14 matches at St James Park.

Leicester

The Foxes got back to winning ways on Saturday by recording a 2-1 win at West Ham. Boss Brendan Rodgers rotated his squad and the result was an end to a two-game losing run against league leaders Liverpool and reigning champions Manchester City.

The win over the Hammers last time out actually ended a three-game winless run for the visitors in the top-flight. The victory maintained their position in second place in the Premier League table. They are ten points behind Liverpool, who have two games in hand, including a home game against Wolves later today.

Leicester have built their success this season on a solid defence. However, after their recent dip in form, the Foxes have now failed to keep a clean sheet in five Premier League games, contributing to four of their last five games producing over 2.5 goals.

Brendan Rodgers team have been impressive on their travels of late in the Premier League, winning five of their last six away games. The exception was a 3-1 defeat at reigning champions Manchester City. The team from the Midlands have proven lethal on their travels in front of goal, scoring at least twice in all five of those recent away wins.

Conclusion

Newcastle are not quite in a rut just yet, but any more poor results could have them looking over their shoulders nervously at the relegation zone. The Magpies need a win to get back on track.

Leicester are likely to restore many of their first-choice players to the starting line-up for this clash after a number of them were rested for the win at West Ham. We are backing the Foxes to record a win.

We are also backing the over 2.5 goals scored. Leicester are potent in attack, while Newcastle have struggled defensively of late.

Verdict: Back the away win at odds of 4/6 and/or the over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 10/11. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
