Prediction and odds for the game: Brighton (29/10) v Chelsea (10/11)

We are backing the away win at 10/11

When:  Wednesday, January 1st 2020, Kick-off 12:30 PM

Where: The AMEX Stadium

In the early Premier League kick-off on New Year’s Day, Brighton host Chelsea at the AMEX Stadium.

Brighton

The Seagulls ended a four-game winless run in the Premier League with a 2-0 win over Bournemouth last time out. The home sides poor recent run of form had seen them slip up 14th place in the table, just five points clear of the relegation zone. Therefore, the win over Bournemouth was much-needed.

Their recent league games have been low-scoring with under 2.5 goals scored in three of their last four Premier League games.

Brighton’s recent home record in the English top-flight has been highly inconsistent, as they have just four of their last 15 matches at the AMEX Stadium. The aforementioned win over Bournemouth ended a poor run of three home league games without a victory for the Seagulls.

The home sides recent home games in the Premier League have been low-scoring, with under 2.5 goals scored in four of their last five matches.

The history of this fixture is against the Seagulls, as the Blues have won the last five meetings between the two teams in all competitions.

Chelsea

The visitors have been highly inconsistent of late in the Premier League. The Blues have won three and lost five of their last eight matches in the top-flight, including recording a 2-1 win at London rivals Arsenal in their last outing.

The visitor’s recent top-flight games have been relatively low-scoring, with under 2.5 goals scored in three of their last four league outings. The win at Arsenal bucked that particular low-scoring trend.

Frank Lampard’s team have been more effective on their travels, than on home soil of late in the Premier League. In fact, the Blues have won seven of their last nine away games in the top-flight. The two exceptions were games at reigning champions Manchester City and in-form Everton.

Their awesome firepower has been the key to their success on their travels in the Premier League, as they have found the net at least twice in all seven of those recent away games. The Blues attacking threat has contributed to nine of their last ten away games producing over 2.5 goals.

Talking about scoring, Blues striker Tammy Abraham ended a four-game streak without a Premier League goal with the winner against Arsenal. The strike was Abraham’s 12th top-flight goal of the campaign.

Conclusion

Brighton needed the win last time out and had looked poor prior to the victory. Chelsea are dangerous on their travels and that is why we are backing the away win.

However, we believe this game will buck the recent trend of high-scoring away games for the Blues, as we are backing the under 2.5 goals scored.

Verdict: Back the away win at odds of 10/11 and the under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 11/10. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
