We are backing the Barcelona victory

When: Thursday 09th January 2020, Kick-off 7 PM

Where: The King Abdullah Sports City

On Thursday night, reigning La Liga champions Barcelona faces Atletico Madrid in the semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup.

Barcelona

Reigning champions Barcelona are once again top of the Spanish top-flight. The Catalan giants are currently unbeaten in 11 games in all competitions, winning on seven occasions. However, the Blaugrana have drawn three of their last four games in all competitions.

Despite their recent draws, Barcelona have scored at least two goals in five of their last six competitive outings. Only arch-rivals Real Madrid have prevented Barcelona scoring in their last ten competitive matches.

The Catalan giants have a good recent record against Atletico, as they are unbeaten in eight matches against the team from the Spanish capital, having won on five occasions.

Barcelona are the most successful team in the history of the Spanish Super Cup, winning the competition on 13 occasions and finishing as runners-up ten times. The Blaugrana defeated Thursday night’s opponents in this competition back in 2013, but the victory was only achieved on the away goal rule after a 1-1 draw over two legs in the old two-team format.

Atletico Madrid

The Rojiblancos qualified for the Spanish Super Cup this season by finishing as runners-up to Barcelona in La Liga in season 2018/19.

Diego Simeone’s team made a rather inconsistent start to their La Liga campaign. However, Atleti have found form of late, recording four straight wins in all competitions. They are also unbeaten in five matches, with their last defeat in any competition coming in a 1-0 home defeat by Barcelona at the start of December.

Atletico have been pretty prolific of late, scoring at least two goals in their last four matches. However, in typical Atletico style, their recent matches have been relatively low-scoring, with six of their last eight competitive games producing under 2.5 goals. He fact that no team in La Liga’s top-seven has scored fewer goals than Atletico this season is a big factor in those recent low-scoring games.

Atletico have only appeared in the Supercopa on six occasions, winning twice and losing four times. Their most recent appearance was in 2014 when they recorded a 3-1 aggregate win over arch-rivals Real Madrid. Despite their relative lack of appearances, only Spain’s big two and Deportivo La Coruna have made more Spanish Super Cup appearances.

Conclusion

The recent meetings between these two teams have been tight low-scoring affairs, with under 2.5 goals scored in the past five matches between the pair. We are backing Barcelona to record the victory and we are also backing the game to be another tight low-scoring affair.

Verdict: We are backing Barcelona to record victory at evens and/or under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 10/11. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
