We are backing the home win

When: Saturday 1st February 2020, Kick-off 3 PM

Where: The Santiago Bernabeu

On Saturday afternoon, Madrid rivals Real and Atletico go head-to-head in a vital La Liga derby match in Spain’s capital.

Real Madrid

Zinedine Zidane’s team will head into this game in high spirits after returning to the top of the table last weekend. A 1-0 victory at Real Valladolid coupled with leaders Barcelona’s 2-0 defeat at Valencia saw Los Blancos move three points clear of the reigning champions. The pair had been locked on the same number of points for the past few weeks.

The win at Valladolid ensured that Real Madrid extended their undefeated run in the Spanish top-flight to 12 matches. The victory also saw Zidane’s team record a third consecutive league win. A key feature of the home sides play of late has been their defensive solidity, illustrated by the fact they have kept four clean sheets in their last five La Liga games.

Their home form in the Spanish top-flight has not been too shabby of late either, as the team from the capital are now ten matches unbeaten at the Bernabeu in La Liga, recording seven victories. Los Blancos have been potent in front of goal at the Bernabeu of late, scoring at least twice in seven of their last nine outings.

Atletico Madrid

All is not well at Atletico of late. A lacklustre 0-0 draw at the Wanda Metropolitano means that Los Rojiblancos have not won in their last four games in all competitions. To make matters worse, they have lost two of those four recent winless matches.

Their recent winless run has seen capital rivals Getafe move level on points with the visitors in the race for a Champions League spot. Getafe have better goal difference, although Atleti have the head-to-head superiority.

The stat that Diego Simeone’s team has won just six of their last 18 matches will not make good reading for the Argentinian boss. The current run of form has even led to question marks over the future of the highly-rated Argentine boss in Madrid.

Atletico really needs to start picking up victories away from home in La Liga. They have drawn five of their last seven matches on their travels in the Spanish top-flight, winning just once.

Conclusion

The recent meetings between these two teams have been incredibly tight. In fact, six of the last seven meetings between these two teams have ended in draws. The draw could happen again.

However, we are backing Los Blancos to take advantage of the low confidence at Atletico and record a narrow victory. We are also backing the under 2.5 goals scored, as meetings between these two are also usual tight affairs.

Verdict: We are backing the home win at odds of 4/5 and/or the under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 4/6. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
