Prediction and odds for the game: Manchester United (2/5) v Sheffield United (15/2)

We are backing under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 4/5

When: Wednesday, 24th June 2020, Kick-off 18:00

Where: Old Trafford

On Wednesday evening, Manchester United host Sheffield United at Old Trafford, as the two teams battle it out for a top-five position in the Premier League that will bring Champions League football for next season.

Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team are in a good position to book their place in Europe’s elite competition for next season, as the Red Devils are currently fifth-place in the table. However, the home side are only ahead of Wolves in sixth-place courtesy of superior goal difference.

When it comes to the fight for the European places, the visitors could move level on points with the Red Devils with a victory in this clash. Therefore, this is a game that is must-win for United.

United are undefeated in their last six matches in the English top-flight, having recorded three wins and three draws. Those draws may have been slightly disappointing, but considering two of them were at Everton and Tottenham they were not the worse results in the world.

The men from Manchester have a strong recent home record at Old Trafford, suffering just one loss in their previous 12 home league games in the top-flight. Solskjaer’s team have managed to keep four clean sheets in their last five outings in the league on their patch.

Sheffield United

The Blades are enjoying a very promising first season back in the English top-flight. Despite picking up just a point from their two games since the restart, Chris Wilder’s team are still well in the race for the European spots this season.

The team from Yorkshire were in good form before the break in league action, as they were undefeated in their previous five league outings in the English top-flight before the 3-0 defeat Newcastle last time out.

Their recent matches in the Premier League have been low-scoring, with under 2.5 goals scored in 12 of their last 14 matches. Those low-scoring games may not be that much of a shock, as only champions-elect Liverpool have conceded fewer goals in the English top-flight than the visitors.

The Blades have struggled on their travels of late in the Premier League, having recorded just one of their last six games on the road in the top-flight. Six of their last seven away games in the Premier League have produced under 2.5 goals.

Conclusion

Manchester United have been unconvincing of late. However, they will face a Sheffield United team without goalkeeper dean Henderson, who is on-loan from United, suspended defender John Egan and likely centre-back Jack O’Connell. With those absences in mind, we are going to back the home win.

Despite the possible defensive absences, the visitors should still be strong in defence, so we are also backing under 2.5 goals scored.

Verdict: We are backing the home win at odds of 2/5 and/or under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 4/5. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
