Prediction and odds for the game: Newcastle (13/2) v Liverpool (4/11)

We are backing both teams to score at odds of 3/4

When: Sunday, 26th July 2020, Kick-off 16:00

Where: St James Park

This will be the last game of the season in what has been a memorable campaign for Liverpool as they travel to St James Park to face Newcastle.

Newcastle

The Magpies have enjoyed a pretty steady Premier League campaign under local lad Steve Bruce. The experienced head coach was not the most popular appointment amongst the Toon army. However, his team have achieved their objective of remaining in the English top-flight with ease. They head into this game knowing that they can only finish 13th or 14th place in the Premier League table.

It was a good job that the team from the north east are well clear of the relegation zone, as they have failed to win any of their previous five games in the English top-flight. A goalless draw at Brighton last time out ended a run of three straight league wins for Bruce’s team.

Newcastle have struggled for victories on home soil of late in the Premier League, winning just once in their previous eight home games in the English top-flight. They have also conceded at least twice in their last three league matches at St James Park.

Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp’s team have had the Premier League title tied up for a few weeks now. The Reds moved on to 96 points in the English top-flight last time out, recording a 5-3 home win over Chelsea at Anfield. The victory ended a mini-run of two league games without a victory for the new English champions.

In truth, the Merseysider’s recent league form has been inconsistent, maybe because they have already secured the title. The visitors have won just three of their last six outings in the Premier League. Their recent league matches have been high-scoring, with over 2.5 goals scored in five of their previous seven games in the English top-flight.

Klopp’s team have a surprisingly poor recent away record in the league. The visitors have won just once in their previous five matches on their travels in the top-flight, suffering three defeats in the process. The Reds have also failed to score in three of those five away matches in the top-flight.

Liverpool have a good recent record against Newcastle, as they are unbeaten in six matches against the Magpies, having recorded four wins in the process.

Conclusion

Both teams will want to finish the season with a win, despite very little else being at stake in this clash. We do believe Liverpool will record a victory, but the away win offers very little value. Instead, we are backing both teams to score, as Liverpool have not looked great defensive, yet are prolific in attack. The other bet we are taking a punt on is draw/Liverpool, as the visitors may be slow to get going, but their superior quality should tell in the end.

Verdict: We are backing both teams to score at odds of 3/4 and/or draw/Liverpool at odds of 3/1. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
