Prediction and odds for the game: Brentford (Evens) v Fulham (11/4)

We are backing the Brentford win

When: Tuesday, 4th August 2020, Kick-off 19:45

Where: Wembley Stadium

On Tuesday night, Brentford and Fulham go head-to-head at Wembley in the Championship play-off final to decide which team will be playing Premier League football next season. It should be an exciting capital derby clash.

Brentford

This game gives the Bees a second chance of promotion after they blew the chance of automatic promotion by losing their final two league games of the campaign. Thomas Frank’s team missed out on going up automatic by two points, despite being the Championship top scorers.

They even lost the first of the semi-finals in the play-offs, suffering a 1-0 defeat at Swansea City. However, they signed off life at Griffin Park by recording a 3-1 win over the Welsh side in the second leg to earn their place in the final.

The win over the Swans in the second leg means that the Bees have now recorded nine wins from their previous 12 outings in the English second tier. Some will say that Frank’s team has been unfortunate not to win promotion automatically.

One of the main reasons for Brentford’s potency in front of goal has been 24-year-old striker Ollie Watkins, who has fired home an impressive 26 Championship goals in 48 appearances. Only Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic, who scored 26 goals scored more goals in the second tier than Watkins in their regulation 46 league matches.

Fulham

The Cottagers have enjoyed an excellent campaign under rookie head coach Scott Parker. The team from south west London finished fourth in the table, level on points with Tuesday nights opponents.

Fulham ended the season with a seven-game unbeaten run in the Championship, including recording five victories. A 2-1 home defeat by Cardiff City ended their eight-game unbeaten run though. However, it was not enough for the Bluebirds to stop the Cottagers progressing to the final. A 2-0 win in Wales in the first leg saw them through.

Defensive solidity has been a crucial factor in Parker’s team making it to the lucrative final, as Fulham have kept clean sheets in five of their previous five Championship matches. Those recent clean sheets have contributed to Fulham’s recent league games being relatively low-scoring, with under 2.5 goals scored in five of their previous eight Championship outings.

Conclusion

At the end of the Championship season, there was very much little between these two London rivals. The 3-1 win over Swansea saw the Bees get back to winning ways and we are backing Thomas Frank’s team to edge this clash. Both these teams have dangerous attacking players, so it will be no surprise that we will are backing over 2.5 goals scored.

Verdict: We are backing a Brentford win at evens and/or over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 6/5. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
