On Tuesday night, RB Leipzig and PSG go head-to-head in Lisbon for the chance to book their place in Sunday’s Champions League final. Who will make?

RB Leipzig

It seems like an age since RB Leipzig appointed highly-rated young head coach Julian Nagelsmann. The 33-year-old has unsurprisingly done an excellent job with Leipzig, mounting an unlikely challenge for the Bundesliga title for much of the campaign.

However, this season will not be remembered for Die Rotten Bullen’s domestic exploits, but rather the fact that they made it to their first-ever Champions League semi-final just 12 years after the creation of the club. Even the exit of top goalscorer Timo Werner to Chelsea has done little to hinder Leipzig’s campaign in Europe’s elite competition.

Powered by a seven-game unbeaten run in Europe, including five wins along the way, Nagelsmann’s team have been hugely impressive in this season’s competition. Branded as underdogs against highly experienced European campaigners Atletico Madrid in the last eight, Nagelsmann’s tactical nous saw his team record a creditable 2-1 victory.

However, arguably Tuesday night’s opponents are a step up from Atletico and a team that plays a very different style of football to Diego Simeone’s team. This clash will be a good test of young RB Leipzig’s young boss against his mentor Thomas Tuchel.

PSG

The big-spending French giants have their holy grail of the Champions League within their sights after seemingly trying forever to win it. In truth, the Parisians have simply not been good enough to win Europe’s elite competition in recent seasons. They have been accused of ‘bottling it’ in the latter stages of the competition on almost a yearly basis.

However, PSG have shown fighting spirit in the last two rounds of the Champions League. They first came back from a first-leg defeat against Dortmund to progress to the last eight. It was their 2-1 victory against Atalanta in the quarter-finals. Tuchel’s team needed a last-minute equaliser from Brazilian Marquinhos before a winner in stoppage-time from substitute Eric Choupo-Moting.

The last-gasp winner against Atalanta means that the team from the French capital have won seven of their previous nine matches in Europe’s elite competition. Unsurprisingly, considering their strike force, PSG have scored at least twice in four of their last four outings in the Champions League.

Conclusion

RB Leipzig have been something of a dark horse in the Champions League this season. They head into this clash as underdogs. Unfortunately for Nagelsmann and his team, we believe they will suffer a narrow defeat in this clash. It is hard to see this game being a low-scoring game, so we are also backing over 2.5 goals.

Verdict: We are backing the PSG win at odds of 3/4 and/or over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 4/7. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
