Prediction and odds for the game: Celtic (2/5) v Ferencvaros (11/2)

We are back the home win

When: Wednesday, 26th August 2020, Kick-off 19:45

Where: Celtic Park

On Wednesday night, Celtic host Hungarian outfit Ferencvaros at Celtic Park in the second qualifying round of the Champions League.

Celtic

Neil Lennon’s team heads into this clash as favourites to progress to the third qualifying round. The Hoops have started their campaign in a decent manner. However, the highlight of their early-season so far was a 6-0 drubbing of Icelandic outfit RK Reykjavik in the first qualifying round of this competition.

The reigning Scottish champions have a decent recent record in the early stages of the Champions League, as the Hoops have suffered just one defeat in their last seven outings in Europe’s elite competition, having recorded five victories.

However, they have struggled to make it to the group stage of the competition. A 5-4 aggregate defeat in the third qualifying round against Cluj last season was particularly disappointing, as they had picked up a 1-1 draw away from home in the first leg, only to lose the second leg 4-3 at Celtic Park.

Celtic have a decent recent record on home soil in the Champions League, as they have won five of their last seven home games in Europe’s elite competition. The Hoops have also scored at least two goals in their last four Champions League games at Parkhead.

The home side will be looking to French forward Odsonne Edouard to provide their attacking threat, as the young French forward has already scored four times in as many appearances this season in all competitions.

Ferencvaros

The visitors are underdogs to make it through to the third qualifying round of the Champions League, although they will be hoping to cause a minor shock in Glasgow. They beat Swedish team Djurgardens  2-0 in the first qualifying round to set this tie up. The victory ended a run of three winless games in the Champions League. However, despite that recent winless run, they have won lost just once in their previous seven games in Europe’s elite competition.

Although their recent Champions League games have all been high-scoring, both teams have scored in seven of their previous nine matches in Europe’s elite competition. The fact that the visitors have scored in six of previous seven games in the Champions League.

Ferencvaros are unbeaten in four away games in the Champions League. However, three of those four games have finished in draws. The visitors have won just two of their eight away games in Europe’s elite competition. They have also kept just one clean sheet in those eight matches on their travels.

Conclusion

Celtic will be highly confident of progressing into the third qualifying round. We expect the Hoops to come out on top in this game, so we are backing the home win, even if it is not massively impressive odds. We are also backing both teams to score, as both teams possess good attacking players.

Verdict: We are backing the home win at odds of 2/5 and/or both teams to score at odds of 10/11. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
