Can Gareth Bale revive his career at Tottenham?

According to Sky Sports, Tottenham are on the brink of signing Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale on a season-long loan deal. Reportedly, the experienced winger is awaiting permission to fly to London to sign a contract. The 31-year-old looks set to return to the club he left in 2013 for Los Blancos in 2013 in a then-world record fee of £86million

Bale has enjoyed incredible success

When Bale arrived at Real Madrid in 2013 he was one of the brightest talents in the world game, hence the world-record fee. He was expected to have a glittering career. There is an argument that he has fulfilled that requirement.

During his career with the Spanish giants, Bale has won La Liga twice and the Champions League on an incredible four occasions. The winger played a key role in two of the victories of the latter, scoring in two finals. His most memorable contribution was a final strike in the 2018 final when Los Blancos defeated Liverpool 3-1.

The forward has also scored 105 goals in 215 La Liga appearances for Real Madrid, which is certainly not a terrible goal tally. Maybe some would expect more for a world-record fee.

A polarizing figure at Real Madrid

Despite the trophies won, Bale seems to be a polarising figure at Real Madrid. The problem for Bale is that he has never seemed to show great love for Los Blancos. There have also been unproven claims that he doesn’t get involved with his teammates and that his language skills are not great. This may be down to the Welsh winger being a relative introverted character, who does not buy into the superstar football persona.

The fact he has struggled with injury problems have not helped his cause. Some rather harshly accuses Bale of a weak mentality. However, the winger has not helped himself by talking about the fact that he would rather play golf than play football. Bale recently revealed in an interview that he has previously requested to leave the club, but the Spanish giants blocked a move that was a highly interesting one.

The move was reportedly the potentially lucrative switch to the Chinese Super League. The latest interview seemed to seal Bale’s exit from the Spanish club. The question was where the Wales forward would end up in the current transfer window.

Will the switch revive Bale’s career?

Very few have ever questioned Gareth Bale’s football ability. However, his attitude and just his willingness to still play football at a high level seem to be constantly questioned. He had fallen out of favour at Real Madrid even before his revealing interview about the Spanish club denying his exit.

There seems to be no way back for Bale with the Spanish champions. One of the big questions is could a return to the north London club with seemingly something to prove revive his football career. Could it re-ignite the football fire that seems to have been missing the last few seasons?

Maybe a switch back to the Premier League can do just that. He did seem happy just sit out of his Real Madrid contract and in his words ‘play golf’ for the remainder of his deal in Spain. Hopefully, that has changed, as a fit and firing Gareth Bale would be a very good asset for any team.

Spurs started the campaign in a disappointing manner. Therefore the signing may lift spirits at the club. On paper, the move makes sense for all parties. Whether the move makes sense on the football pitch only time will tell.
