Many players have made good starts to the new season. One of the players who has made the brightest starts to the campaign is Everton, and now England striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The 23-year-old scored on his international debut in a 3-0 friendly defeat of Wales. The goal means the former-Sheffield United star has now scored ten goals in his seven appearances for club and country this season.

Developing into the complete forward

The last few seasons have seen the forward develop immensely. He had been in and out of the Toffees team until the last campaign, simply because he did not score enough goals. Calvert-Lewin seemingly had every other positive attribute for a forward, as he had good technique, was in good in the air, pace and was able to hold the ball up.

Last season he started to add more goals to his game, scoring 13 times in the top-flight. The appointment of Carlo Ancelotti as Everton head coach in November had a big effect on the striker’s output. The Italian’s influence and the continuing mentoring from former Toffees icon Duncan Ferguson is helping Calvin-Lewin to develop into the complete forward player.

In the right place

Dominic Calvert-Lewin career at Everton has not always been as positive. For a long time, there were question marks over whether the youngster was ever going to score enough goals to be considered as the Toffees main striker. He has worked so hard to prove his doubters wrong on Merseyside.

The fact that he was working hard on the pitch was maybe to his detriment, as he tended to chase lost causes and worked so hard often hindered his chances of being in the penalty area to finish off chances. Ancelotti has encouraged Calvin-Lewin to stay in the box more and that seemingly obvious bit of advice is certainly showing its results.

The England international is now looking like far more of goal poacher than he has ever done. At the end of the day, The striker’s job is to score goals. In the early part of his career, he did not look like he had that killer instinct in front of goal. However, this season he has looked like a different player. He is playing with the huge confidence that a good run of form brings a player. If he continues anything near in his current vein of form then he will be in for a very good season.

An exciting attacking option for England

For a long time Tottenham forward Harry Kane has been England first-choice striker. That is unlikely to change anytime soon. However, the 28-year-old needs a decent alternative, as in the last few years he has endured injury problems. Kane also plays every game for Spurs when he is fit. He never gets a rest.

Calvert-Lewin’s form means that he is an exciting attacking option for England head coach Gareth Southgate to consider when Kane needs a rest. The Everton forward could also be sent on as a late impact substitute if the Three Lions need a goal. The last thing that opposition defences need when their legs are tired is the introduction of an energetic forward.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has experienced a major upturn in form this season after a slow end to last season. He may not continue scoring goals at such a frequent rate, but surely he is on course to beat his goal tally of 13 top-flight goals from last season. His early-season good form is not just good for Everton, but for England as well.
