Prediction and odds for the game: Everton (11/4) v Liverpool (4/5)

We are backing the draw at odds of 16/5

When: Saturday, 17th October 2020, Kick-off 12:30

Where: Goodison Park

On Saturday lunchtime, Everton host arch-rivals Liverpool at Goodison Park, in what could be the biggest Premier League Merseyside derby in recent years.

Everton

Carlo Ancelotti’s team have won all seven of their games in all competitions, including winning all four of their top-flight matches. The Toffees recorded a 4-2 win at home against Brighton last time out, which was the fourth straight game in which the Merseysider’s had scored at least twice. The good run of form has been enough to take Everton to the top of the Premier League table.

Everton have not been that consistent on home soil of late in the Premier League. However, the Toffees have been hard to beat at Goodison Park, having suffered just one home defeat in the English top-flight in their last 14 matches. The Merseysider’s give the opposition to score at Goodison though, as they have not kept a clean sheet in their last six league matches on home soil.

Newly-capped England international Dominic Calvert Lewin will be looking to add to his Premier League goal tally of six goals. The 23-year-old also scored on his international debut against Wales in a 3-0 friendly win.

Liverpool

The reigning Premier League champions suffered a 7-2 drubbing at Aston Villa in the top-flight. The game was written off as a one-off for Jurgen Klopp’s team. However, the Reds have shown defensive weakness all season in the English top-flight. Only newly promoted West Brom have conceded more top-flight goals this season. One clean sheet in nine league games going back to last season is concerning record for everybody connected with Liverpool.

On the flip-side to the negatives, the visitors have still managed to win five of their last six league games. The shocking defeat at Villa Park ended a five-match winning run for Jurgen Klopp’s team in the English top-flight. The Reds have also managed to score at least two goals in their last six top-flight games.

Liverpool winning the league title early last season may be a reason for their drop off in away form, as they have now claimed just three wins from their previous eight away matches. They have however still scored at least twice in four of their last five Premier League matches on the road.

Conclusion

These derby games have promised so much in recent years and delivered very little. In fact, nine of the last ten Merseyside derbies at Goodison Park have produced draws. On paper, the home team should approach the encounter in a more positive manner. However, the Toffees have a habit of wilting against their arch-rivals. We are backing the draw and we are also backing Everton striker Calvert-Lewin to be an anytime goalscorer, as the forward is in red-hot form.

Verdict: We are backing the draw at odds of 16/5 and/or Dominic Calvert-Lewin to be an anytime goalscorer (All odds are taken from Bet365).
