Chelsea vs Southampton Preview, prediction and odds

Prediction and odds for the game: Chelsea (9/20) v Southampton (11/2)

We are backing both teams to score at odds of 7/10

When: Saturday, 17th October 2020, Kick-off 15:00

Where: Stamford Bridge

On Saturday afternoon, Chelsea host Southampton at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League, with the home side looking to build on a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace last time out.

Despite spending big in the summer bringing in several new players, the Blues have enjoyed a slightly inconsistent start to the new Premier League campaign. Frank Lampard’s team has taken seven points from a possible 12 after the win over Palace. They are currently seventh-place in the English top-flight table.

The Blues have certainly impressed going forward so far this season, as they have only failed to score two or more goals in one of their four top-flight outings. However, despite their prolific form in front of goal this season, neither of the Blues expensive German summer signings Kai Havertz or Timo Werner have found the net in the Premier League. They will be looking to put that right in this clash.

Chelsea have been in formidable home form in the top-flight dating back to last season, as they have now won seven of their previous eight league matches at Stamford Bridge. They have an impressive recent home record in the Premier League, as they have kept clean sheets in four of their previous five league outings.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team have experienced a rollercoaster of a top-flight campaign. The Saints kicked off their league campaign with back-to-back defeats against Crystal Palace and Tottenham, before two straight victories over Burnley and West Brom in their last two league outings.

The team from the south coast conceded six goals in those opening two defeats. However, they have now kept two consecutive clean sheets in the English top-flight.

Southampton have a highly inconsistent away record in the Premier League stretching back to last season. However, they have only lost once in their previous five league games on their travels. Their latest away matches in the top-flight have certainly not been goal fests, as four of their last five games away from home have produced under 2.5 goals. The Saints have only failed to score once in their last eight away games in the top-flight.

The team from the south coast have won just one of the last nine meetings with Chelsea. However, that was when the two teams met last at Stamford Bridge last season.

Chelsea will be big favourites to win this game, but the home win offers little value, and the Saints are unlikely to be easy opponents. Instead, we are looking at the goals markets and backing both teams to score. The Saints offer a significant attacking threat and can cause the Blues defensive problems. The other bet we are recommending is Kai Havertz to break his Premier League goal duck. He looks to be growing into the team and a goal for Germany in midweek will certainly boost his confidence ahead of this clash.

Verdict: We are backing both teams to score at odds of 7/10 and/or Kai Havertz to be an anytime goalscorer at odds of 13/8. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
