Belgium and England will meet once again this weekend as they prepare to clash in a vital UEFA Nations League encounter in Leuven.

Belgium

The Red Devils are still considered, by many, to be in the midst of their golden generation, but it’s safe to say there’s only going to be one or two more tournaments in which that proves to be the case. Belgium did their best to live up to expectations at the World Cup before just falling short to France at the semi-final stage, but heading into the Euros, you’d have to imagine they’re going to be feeling pretty confident.

Looking back on it, it’s hard not to be impressed by Belgium’s 2-0 win over Denmark back in September. The fact that they proceeded to beat Iceland 5-1 just a few days later is equally as eye-catching, although a 1-1 draw against Ivory Coast did raise a few eyebrows. Martinez’s men were then beaten 2-1 by England at Wembley, but they were able to get back on track with consecutive victories against Iceland and Switzerland.

England

While he may have been able to guide the Three Lions to the final four in Russia two years ago, Gareth Southgate is still viewed as a somewhat polarising figure by England fans. Many aren’t exactly convinced that he can be the man to guide them to their first piece of major silverware since 1966, but if they can build up the sort of momentum we saw from them in the aforementioned World Cup, anything is possible.

Aside from their strong defensive record, England haven’t exactly been putting out remarkable performances as of late. They beat Iceland 1-0 in September before drawing 0-0 against Denmark, they impressed in 3-0 wins over local rivals Wales and Republic of Ireland, and they beat Belgium 2-1. Sure, there are some strong results in there, but a 1-0 loss to Denmark in mid-October reminded fans that they’re still capable of the occasional slip-up.

Conclusion

Based on the last few meetings these two sides have had, it makes sense to assume that things are going to wind up being quite tactical. Whether or not the casual fan is into that is irrelevant, because this is a game between two nations that are easily considered to be amongst the favourites heading into next year’s UEFA Euro 2021 tournament. In terms of an official result we’re going to back the 2018 bronze medalists to come away with a narrow yet deserved victory.

Our actual scoreline prediction is going to be 1-0, ensuring that the under 2.5 goals bracket is met.

Verdict: Back the home win at odds of 11/8 and the under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 10/11 (All odds are taken from bet365).
