Prediction and odds for the game: Real Madrid (3/4) v Monchengladbach (15/4)

We are backing the draw at odds of 11/4

When: Wednesday, 9th December 2020, Kick-off 20:00

Where: The Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano

On Wednesday night, Real Madrid and Monchengladbach head into a vital game in Group B of the Champions League, with the group delicately balanced. Incredibly, all four teams still have a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition.

Real Madrid

The reigning Spanish champions are experiencing a difficult campaign. There have even already been calls for head coach Zinedine Zidane to be fired. Los Blancos are six points adrift of league leaders Atletico Madrid in La Liga and Diego Simeone’s team has a game in-hand. The Merengues are also hanging on for dear life in the Champions League too.

Zidane’s team head into this clash second place in the group. However, they are a point behind Wednesday night’s opponents, who lead the group. They are also level on points with third-place Shakhtar Donetsk. If they suffer defeat in this clash and Shakhtar beat Inter in the other game, then the team from the Spanish capital will be eliminated from the Champions League.

Real Madrid do not have a great recent record in Europe’s elite competition, as they have won just two of their last seven games in the competition.

Monchengladbach

The German team have been something of a surprise-package in Group B, as they head into gameweek six as group leaders. The Foals are guaranteed at least third place in the group, which would mean that Marco Rose’s team would drop into the Europa League. A win or a draw between Shakhtar and Inter in the other game would be enough to see Monchengladbach through to the last-16.

Gladbach have won just two of their games in the group, hammering Shakhtar Donetsk 6-0 and 4-0. Their only loss of the drop was on matchday five though, when Rose’s team when down to a 3-2 home defeat against Inter. The German side conceded late goals against both Inter and in the reverse fixture to this one. They will be hoping that those late goals do not come back to haunt them on gameweek six.

The Foals recent Champions League games have been high-scoring, with over 2.5 goals scored in all five of their group matches.

Gladbach do not have a great recent away record in the Champions League, winning just three of their previous nine matches on their travels.

Conclusion

This is a massive game for both teams, but especially for Real Madrid, with boss Zidane now under immense pressure to produce results. However, their recent displays have been highly unconvincing. We are backing the draw because of the home sides recent inconsistent form and the fact that Gladbach are such a dangerous team going forward.

The other recommendation we are making is to back over 2.5 goals scored, as the visitors tend to be involved in high-scoring games, while the home sides defence has not exactly been rock solid of late.

Verdict: We are backing the draw at odds of 11/4 and/or over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 4/7. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
