Prediction & odds for the game: Sheffield United (13/5) v Aston Villa (21/20) – ST is backing the away win
When: Wednesday, 3rd March @ 6pm K.O
Where: Bramall Lane
Aston Villa will continue their push to qualify for European competition this season when they meet Sheffield United on Wednesday night.
Sure, Chris Wilder may be on the verge of guiding Sheffield United back down to the Championship with one of the worst point totals in Premier League history, but we don’t think he’s on the verge of losing his job just yet. Instead, the plan is probably to see what they can do between now and the end of the campaign before kicking on in the summer. Right now they just seem to be going through the motions as a club which is a shame when you consider the success they enjoyed last season.
Beating West Brom in the league and Bristol City in the FA Cup has soothed the pain of February for Sheffield United who have also experienced PL defeats to Chelsea, West Ham, Fulham and Liverpool across the last few weeks.
Aston Villa appear to have reclaimed their position as kings of the West Midlands but in the grand scheme of things, that isn’t going to mean much when put up against their desire to kick on and qualify for Europe. At the start of the season a goal like that would’ve like a million miles away, such in the ever-changing landscape of English football. Now, they just have to throw everything they’ve got against the wall to see what sticks.
Inconsistency continues to follow Aston Villa around like a bad smell right now, dating all the way back to the end of January. They beat Southampton but lost to West Ham, then beat Arsenal before drawing against Brighton and losing to Leicester. This past Saturday they did manage to beat Leeds, but can they keep that winning run going?
Villa are going to approach this game cautiously because Sheffield United really do have nothing left to lose. They know that they have to go for it if they want to have any chance of surviving this season, with many fans already writing them off as certainties for the drop. Because of that we do actually think the Blades are going to get on the scoresheet, but we don’t think they’ll quite be able to avoid defeat against Dean Smith’s men who really want that top six finish.
Our official scoreline prediction is going to be 2-1 Aston Villa, ensuring we hit the over 2.5 goals bracket – so brace yourself for some drama on Wednesday.
Verdict: Back the away win at odds of 21/20 and the over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 6/5 (All odds are taken from bet365).[geosnippet id=3620]
