Where: The Olympic Stadium Baku

On Saturday afternoon, Wales and Switzerland clash in their opening Euro 2020 Group A match. Both teams will look to gain an early advantage in what could be a highly competitive group.

Wales

The Dragons surprised everybody at Euro 2016 by making the semi-finals at their finish attempt in the European Championships. In fact, that was only the second time Wales had qualified for a major international tournament. Like back in 2016, their key players could be Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale and Juventus’ Aaron Ramsey, who has endured mixed fortunes in Turin.

Wales will be managed by interim head coach Robert Page in the absence of Ryan Giggs. The Dragons recent results have been something of a mixed bag, as they head into this potentially difficult clash on the back of just two wins in their previous five matches.

One notable positive from Wales recent outings has been their solid defensive record, as they have kept clean sheets in three of their last four matches. However, on the flip-side, they have scored just two goals in their previous four outings.

Switzerland

Vladimir Petkovic’s team topped Group D in qualifying, which was a group also containing Denmark and the Republic of Ireland. The Swiss don’t have a great record in European Championships, as they have only made it out of their group once in four attempts. However, that was in the last Euros in 2016 when they made it out of their group only to exit at the last 16 stage.

A solid defence and some maverick forward players make the Swiss an interesting prospect in Group A, which could be a fascinating group with all four teams fancying their chances of making it through to the knockout stages of the competition.

Switzerland head into this clash on good form, having recorded six straight wins, having gone seven games without a defeat. Petkovic’s team has also been potent in front of goal of late, scoring at least two goals in five of their last six international outings. Their goalscoring efforts have contributed to five of their last six international games producing over 2.5 goals. Forward Mario Gavranovic has hot form at the right time, scoring four goals in his last three international appearances.

Conclusion

These two teams could be well-matched, even if Switzerland are slight favourites to emerge victoriously. We are expecting a relatively tight game, as Robert Page has his team well-drilled defensively, which is why we are backing under 2.5 goals scored. The other recommendation we make is the draw, as we believe the two teams will cancel each other out.

Verdict: We are backing the draw at odds of 2/1 and/or under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 2/5. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
