Prediction and odds for the game: Villarreal (19/10) vs Manchester United (7/5)

We are backing the draw at odds of 12/5

When: Tuesday 23 November 2021, Kick-off 17:45

Where: The Estadio de la Ceramica

On Tuesday night, Villarreal and Manchester United clash at the Estadio de la Ceramica, in what is a vital match in Group F of the Champions League.

Villarreal

The Yellow Submarine’s form has been unconvincing of late, which has seen question marks placed over the future of head coach Unai Emery. A 1-1 weekend draw a Celta Vigo means that the Spanish are unbeaten in three games in competitions. However, on the flip-side, they have also won just three of their last eight competitive outings.

Despite their poor mixed form, Villarreal are in one of the qualification spots for the knockout stages, behind the visitor’s courtesy of a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford, which gives the Red Devils the advantage in the head-to-head.

Since the defeat in Manchester, Emery’s team has won back-to-back Champions League matches against Young Boys. Even with the two straight European wins, the Spanish team are just two points clear of third-place Atalanta, who face Young Boys in the other game in the group.

Villarreal have a poor recent home record in the Champions League, winning just once in six home games in European football’s elite competition.

Manchester United

This week has been one of upheaval at United, after the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday. Michael Carrick will oversee the team for what could be a pivotal game for the Red Devils chances of qualifying for the last-16 of the competition.

The visitor’s form has been poor of late, as they have won just one of their previous five games in all competitions, having suffered three defeats in the run. Some woeful defensive displays led to their poor results and ultimately Solskjaer’s dismissal, as United have conceded at least two goals in six of their last seven competitive matches.

One plus for United is that they are unbeaten in their last three games in the Champions League after losing their opening game in Group F against Young Boys. However, they needed a last-gasp Cristiano Ronaldo to come away from their match at Atalanta with a 2-2 draw.

United have a poor recent away record in this competition, as they have failed to win in four matches on their travels, having suffered three defeats. The Red Devils have also conceded at least two goals in each of their last four away matches in the Champions League.

Conclusion

This is a difficult one to judge because we don’t know how the visitors are going to react to the change of manager. They may continue to struggle or may get a new manager bounce. On paper, neither team are playing exceptionally well at the minute, so we are backing the draw. The other bet we are backing is for both teams to score, as Villarreal have been poor in defence on home soil in the Champions League in recent seasons, while United are highly vulnerable in defence.

Our Tips: We are backing the draw at odds of 12/5 and/or both teams to score at odds of 8/13. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
