Prediction and odds for the game: Liverpool (13/20) vs Leicester (4/1)

We are backing over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 3/5

When: Wednesday 22 December 2021, Kick-off 19:45

Where: Anfield

On Wednesday night, Liverpool host Leicester at Anfield in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Liverpool

The Reds head into this clash on the back of a 2-2 draw at Tottenham. The result made Jurgen Klopp’s team nine games unbeaten in all competitions. However, it also ended an eight-game winning streak for the men from Merseyside. One trend that continued in north London was Liverpool’s eye for goal, as it was the seventh game from their last nine that saw the Reds score at least two goals.

In the past Liverpool head coach has often used the Carabao Cup as an opportunity to field some of his youngsters and fringe players. With several players likely absent due to positive Covid-19 tests, the German head coach may well have to turn to his lesser-used players for this one.

Liverpool have a mixed recent record in this competition, mainly down to the rotation of their squad. In fact, the Reds have won just four of their last 11 matches in the competition in 90 minutes. Klopp’s team have beaten Norwich and Preston so far in this season’s competition, recording 3-0 wins in both games.

Leicester

The Foxes have struggled for consistency this season. In their last outing, the team from the Midlands recorded a 4-0 win to end a run of three games without a Premier League win. The victory also brought a much-needed clean sheet for Brendan Rodgers team, who had conceded at least two goals in their previous four matches in all competition.

Their defensive instability this season is understandable considering that they are missing the likes of James Justin and Wesley Fofana, who are both once again expected to miss out on this clash.

Like their hosts, Leicester have a slightly mixed record in the Carabao Cup of late. This season they have won 2-0 at Millwall and defeated Brighton on penalty kicks after a 2-2 draw in the last round. However, the victory over Millwall is the Foxes only Carabao Cup win in 90 minutes in their five outings in the competition.

Leicester have been hard to beat on their travels of late in the League Cup, though, as the Foxes have lost just once in their last away games in the competition. They have claimed four wins in normal time and three in penalty shootouts in the run.

Conclusion

With so many senior players potentially absent from both teams it is hard to know what to expect. However, we have now become accustomed to top-flight teams being under strength in this competition.

We are going to look at the goals market for our tips. The first bet we are backing is over 2.5 goals scored, as both teams have shown defensive vulnerabilities of late, while both have quality attacking players. The other bet we recommend is for both teams to score, which for similar reasons for backing over 2.5 goals scored.

Our Tips: We are backing over 2.5 goals at odds of 3/5 and/or both teams to score at odds of 4/6. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
