Prediction and odds for the game: Blackburn (8/5) vs Middlesbrough (7/4)

We are backing the draw at odds of 9/4

When: Monday 24 January 2022, Kick-off 19:45

Where: Ewood Park

On Monday night, Blackburn host Middlesbrough at Ewood Park, in what could be a massive game in the race for promotion to the Premier League.

Blackburn

Rovers have been one of the surprise packages of the current Championship campaign. Tony Mowbray’s team are currently third-place in the second-tier table, only behind second-place Bournemouth courtesy of an inferior goal difference.

The north west outfit may have been in an even better position had it not been for a shock 2-0 defeat at Hull City last time out. The defeat ended a ten-game unbeaten run in the league, eight of which games had finished in Blackburn victories.

One player that has played a key role for Rovers this season is Chilean international Ben Brereton, who has scored an impressive 20 goals in 27 league matches for Rovers. Only Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic has scored more Championship goals this season.

Blackburn have a good recent home record in the Championship, as they are unbeaten in six league matches at Ewood Park, having recorded five victories in the process.

Middlesbrough

The team from the north east will feel that they still have a chance of gaining automatic promotion this season. Boro are currently seventh-place in the Championship table, two points outside the play-off spots.

They are also seven points outside the automatic promotion spots. However, they have games in hand on many teams above them in the table. If results go for them in the next month or so, then Chris Wilder’s team could be right in the fight to go up automatically. For now, though, the focus is securing a top-six spot and a place in the play-offs.

Middlesbrough have been in good form of late in the Championship, as the visitors are unbeaten in seven league games, having recorded six wins in the process. They have also scored at least two goals in their last three league outings.

The visitors are also unbeaten in their last four away games in the Championship, recording two wins and two draws. However, Boro has won just three of their last eight away games. Their recent league matches on their travels have been low-scoring, with under 2.5 goals scored in 11 of the last 13 away games in the second tier.

Conclusion

Both teams head into this potentially pivotal match in good form and it is hard to pick a winner. We are backing the draw, as the two teams are fairly evenly matched. The other recommendation we are making is to back under 2.5 goals, as it could be a close encounter considering the possible implications for their seasons.

Our Tips: We are backing the draw at odds of 9/4 and/or under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 4/6. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
