On Tuesday night, Poland and Sweden go head-to-head in Krakow in one of the World Cup play-off finals.

Poland

The home team were given a bye into the final because original play-off opponents Russia were suspended from international football competition.

Poland made it to the World Cup play-offs by finishing second in Group I, six points behind group winners England. It was always going to be a struggle to qualify automatic from the group and it work out as many observers expected it to.

Czeslaw Michniewicz’s team finished their World Cup qualifying campaign with four wins in their last six matches. A 2-1 home defeat by Hungary in their last World Cup qualifier in the group stages ended a five-game unbeaten run in qualifying.

Poland have a strong recent home record in World Cup qualifying, as they have won nine of their last 12 qualifiers on home soil. The defeat against Hungary ended an 11-match home unbeaten run in qualifying.

Poland have a poor recent record against Sweden, having failed to beat the visitors in the last eight international meetings while suffering seven defeats in the process.

Sweden

The visitors needed extra time to record a 1-0 win over the Czech Republic in the semi-finals, which was always going to be a tight and low-scoring encounter.

The draw ended a run of two straight defeats for Sweden in World Cup qualifying, as they lost their last two group games against Georgia and Spain. If they had have won both games Janne Andersson’s team would have finished top of the group and booked their place at Qatar 2022 automatically.

Their recent World Cup qualifiers have been low-scoring, with under 2.5 goals scored in their last four matches in World Cup qualifying.

Sweden have been poor on their travels in World Cup qualifiers of late, having lost six of their last nine away games in qualifying. A 1-0 defeat in Spain in their last away game in qualifying was their third straight loss away from home in qualifying.

The visitors have had problems scoring goals of late in their recent away qualifiers, having failed to score in four of their last six away games in World Cup qualifying.

Conclusion

This game looks set to be a tight and tense affair, as in terms of qualifying there is not much between these two teams. Sweden have been something of a bogey team for Poland in recent years. However, Poland are strong on home soil and Sweden have struggled on their travels of late. With that in mind, we are backing a narrow win, in a low-scoring encounter. We are also backing under 2.5 goals scored, too.

Our Tips: We are backing Poland to win at odds of 11/8 and/or under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 1/2. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
