On Sunday afternoon, two teams desperately in need of a Premier League meet at Goodison Park, as Everton host Tottenham. Another defeat could well mean the end of Marco Silva’s reign as Toffees boss.

Everton (Odds of 17/10 for victory)

The home side has experienced a difficult start to their Premier League campaign and are currently 16th position in the table, just two points above 18th place Southampton. It is a far cry to where Everton expected to be at this point of the season, with the top-six seemingly a realistic possibility at the beginning of the campaign.

The Toffees league form has been woeful of late, as they have lost five of their last six games. However, a midweek 2-0 defeat of Watford in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup may just lift spirits amongst those connected with the Merseyside club.

One positive for Silva’s team is that their home form has remained relatively good, as they have won seven of their last nine league matches at Goodison Park. They won their last league game on home soil, beating West Ham 2-0.

Tottenham has been something of a bogey team for Everton in recent seasons. The Toffees have failed to win in 13 outings against the team from north London.

Tottenham (Odds of 8/5 for victory)

Just like the home side, Spurs season has not quite gone to plan so far. Mauricio Pochettino’s team are currently 11th place in the table, just two points above the Toffees in the table.

Pochettino’s team head into this clash on the back of just one victory from their last five outings in the English top-flight. A record of two wins in their last nine league games is hardly stellar either.

Last time out, Spurs suffered a 2-1 defeat at Everton’s neighbours Liverpool. They will fancy their chances of recording a slightly more positive result on Sunday.

Tottenham may be the favourites to record a victory at Goodison, but their recent away record is atrocious and means they cannot afford to be complacent.

Pochettino’s team has failed to win in their last 11 outings on the road in the top-flight while losing nine times. The visitors are currently in the midst of a three-game losing streak on their travels. Poor defensive displays have been a big factor in those recent poor away results, as the north London team has conceded at least two in their last five league outings on their travels.

It seems that Goodison Park is the perfect place for Spurs to end that poor recent away record, as they have not lost in six visits to the blue half of Merseyside.

Conclusion

In reality, neither of these teams are in great form and it is hard to back either team to win, even if Tottenham are slight favourites for a victory. It could really go either way.

With that in mind, we are going to back the draw at odds of 12/5, as Everton are in poor form generally, while Tottenham are awful away from home.

Verdict: Back the draw at odds of 12/5. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
