On Wednesday night, Bayer Leverkusen host Atletico Madrid in the Group D of the Champions League, as the visitors look to virtually book their place in the knockout stages of the competition.

Bayer Leverkusen (Odds of 9/5 for victory)

The home side is in the midst of a poor run of form. In fact, the German side has won just once in their last seven games in all competitions. Last time out, they suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Monchengladbach.

Peter Bosz’s side has fared even worse in the Champions League, losing all three of their group games in Europe’s elite competition. The German side has won just twice in their last 16 outings in the Champions League. A record of four defeats from their last five games seems even worse.

That factor that has not helped Bayer in the competition has been a surprising lack of goals. They have scored just once in their last four matches in Europe’s elite competition.

Unsurprisingly considering their poor recent results in the competition, Leverkusen’s home record is poor, as the German side has won just once in their last seven matches on home soil in the competition, losing their last two home games. A record of two clean sheets from their last eight matches on home soil has not helped their European cause.

Atletico Madrid (Odds of 8/5 for victory)

The visitors have picked up a creditable seven points from a possible nine in Group D so far. Los Rojiblancos are level with group leaders Juventus and still hoping to top the group. Diego Simeone’s side could qualify for the knockout stages if they record a victory and Lokomotiv Moscow fail to beat the group leaders in the other game of the night.

Atletico are 11 games unbeaten in all competitions, having also lost just one of their last eight matches in the Champions League. A key to Atletico’s recent good results in this competition has been their defensive displays, as they have kept clean sheets in six of their last eight matches.

One negative for Diego Simeone’s team of late in the Champions League is their away record, as Los Rojiblancos have won just twice in their last ten matches away from the Spanish capital. A 2-0 win over Lokomotiv Moscow in their only away game in the group so far ended a three-game winless run on their travels in the competition.

However, they do have a suffered just one defeat in seven competitive meetings with Bayer Leverkusen in European competition. They will be highly confident of maintaining that strong head-to-head record against the German side.

Conclusion

Bayer Leverkusen’s recent form has been poor after a decent start to life under boss Peter Bosz. The home side look in no shape to take on Atletico Madrid. However, this could be a close encounter. We are backing the away win at odds of 8/5 and also the under 2.5 goals at odds of 8/11 because come on its Atletico Madrid.

Verdict: Back the away win at odds of 8/5 and/or the under 2.5 goals scored at 8/11 (All odds are taken from Bet365).
