Prediction & odds for the game: Werder Bremen (7/2) v Bayer Leverkusen (8/11)
When: Monday, 18th May 2020 @ 7.30pm K.O
Where: Weser Stadium
Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen will meet on Monday night as the Bundesliga officially returns to action this weekend.
A few years ago Werder Bremen were considered to be one of the rising forces in German football, but now, they’re fighting just to hang onto their Bundesliga status. The break came at the perfect time for the club in regards to their performances on the pitch, and while they may have lost their home advantage in this game, they’ll be happy in the knowledge that they’ve got the chance to right the wrongs of the season up to this point.
A shock 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund in the DFB Cup was certainly cause for optimism within the Bremen camp back in early February, but after subsequently going out to Eintracht Frankfurt in the next round, the realisation set in that it may have been a bit of a fluke win. In between that result, they suffered league defeats to Union Berlin, Leipzig and Dortmund again, before a spirited 2-2 draw against Hertha Berlin.
The bridesmaid but never the bride, Bayer Leverkusen were slowly but surely building their way back up to prominence in the weeks prior to the suspension of Bundesliga. With a young squad full of great talent and a manager that appears hellbent to get them back to the top, things are trending in the right direction for Leverkusen. Their big issue in this game will be guarding against complacency, which we all know is capable of derailing an entire campaign.
Three competitions to deal with? No problem. Leverkusen were on a fantastic run prior to the league being suspended, starting off with a 2-0 win over Augsburg and a comfortable 3-1 victory against Porto in the UEFA Europa League. They then booked their place in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup with a win over Union Berlin before dispatching of Frankfurt in the league and Rangers in the first leg of their Europa League tie.
While quite a few games set to provide fans with a sense of unpredictability this weekend, Leverkusen appear to be more confident than ever that they can secure a big result for their season. Bremen will be nervous without the advantage of a home crowd on their side, whereas Leverkusen have the kind of free-flowing style that could really cause the hosts some issues. We’re backing them to win pretty decisively, putting a dagger in the heart of Bremen’s survival aspirations.
We do think there are going to be plenty of goals flying around, which is why we’re backing the over 2.5 goals market.
Verdict: Back the away win at odds of 8/11 and the over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 4/6. (All odds are taken from bet365).
