Prediction and odds for the game: Union Berlin (7/5) v Schalke (2/1)

We are backing the draw at odds of 23/10

When: Sunday, 7th June 2020, Kick-off 14:30

Where: The Stadion An der Alten Forsterei

On Sunday afternoon, Union Berlin host Schalke, as two of the Bundesliga’s out-of-form teams clash, with both teams attempting to move closer to their season aims.

Union Berlin

The Bundesliga debutants enjoyed a strong start to their first campaign in the German top-flight. However, a recent run of form in the Bundesliga has them looking over their shoulder nervously at the relegation battle. Urs Fischer’s team is now just four points clear of the relegation play-off spot in the Bundesliga.

A 4-1 loss at Monchengladbach last time out means that Union have now failed to win in their last six league games, suffering four defeats in the process. A generous defence has been at the heart of the home sides recent poor league form, as they have conceded at least two goals in six of their last eight Bundesliga outings. The poor defensive displays have at least made their recent league matches entertaining for the neutrals, as there have been over 2.5 goals scored in seven of their last eight Bundesliga games.

Union have failed to win in four home games in the Bundesliga, while also winning just once in their last six league games on their travels.

Schalke

The visitors are another team who started their Bundesliga campaign in good fashion, only for their form to fall off a cliff in the second half of the campaign. David Wagner’s team has gone from Champions League contenders to tenth place in just a few months of football. They are now five points of the top-six.

The Royal Blues head into this clash on the back of an 11-game winless run in the Bundesliga, having lost six of their last seven games, including suffering straight league defeats. Last time out, Schalke suffered a highly disappointing 1-0 home loss against relegation-threatened Werder Bremen.

The game against Werder saw Schalke fail to score for the third time in their last four league outings. Just two goals in their last eight outings have been part of their slip down the table.

Unsurprisingly considering their recent slump down the table, Schalke’s recent away record in the Bundesliga is poor. The visitors have failed to win any of their last eight matches on the road, having suffered three straight away defeats. They have conceded at least two goals in all three recent away defeats while scoring just once in their previous six matches on their travels.

Conclusion

These two teams seem to have been having a contest of late over who can perform the worst in the Bundesliga. Neither team look like winning a game at the moment, so we are backing the draw. The other recommended bet is under 2.5 goals scored, as neither team has been prolific in front of goal in recent matches.

Verdict: We are backing the draw at odds of 12/5 and/or under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 4/6. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
