Prediction and odds for the game: Aston Villa (8/1) v Manchester United (1/3)

We are backing over 2.5 goals at odds of 4/6

When: Thursday, 9th July 2020, Kick-off 20:15

Where: Villa Park

On Thursday night, Aston Villa host Manchester United at Villa Park, in what could be a massive Premier League game when it comes to the fight for survival and race for the Champions League spots.

Aston Villa

Things are starting to look bleak for Villa, as Dean Smith’s team are now four points from safety in the fight for survival. It is now looking more likely by the game that the Villans will make a quick return to the Championship after just one season.

The home side’s recent league form has been woeful, as a 2-0 defeat champions Liverpool last time out means that Villa have failed to win in ten league games. To make matters worse they have lost eight of those ten winless matches.

Villa have struggled to keep the opposition teams out this season in the Premier League, as no team in the English top-flight has conceded more goals than the Villans tally of 62. The home team have kept just one clean sheet in their last 14 league matches.

Playing their league games on home soil has proven little advantage for the Villans, as they have lost three of their last four matches at Villa Park in the league.

Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team head to the Midlands in superb form. The Red Devils are unbeaten in nine top-flight games, having recorded six victories, including in their last three league games. The visitors have been prolific of late in the English top-flight, scoring at least twice in six of their last eight league outings.

The recent run of form has seen United consolidate their position in the Champions League qualification spots for next season. United are now three points clear of sixth-place Wolves.

The visitors recent away form in the English top-flight has not been great. Although they are unbeaten in four league matches on their travels, the men from Manchester have won just two of their six away games in the Premier League. Their recent away games on the road in the league have been low-scoring, with under 2.5 goals scored in eight of their last nine matches.

The visitors have been something of a bogey team for Villa in recent years, as the Villans have failed to win any of the last 36 meetings between the pair in all competitions.

Conclusion

It is hard to look past the two teams contrasting fortunes of late. We think United will come out on top in this clash. Although their recent away games have been low-scoring, we are also backing over 2.5 goals scored. Villa have the poorest defence in the top-flight and Solskjaer’s team has looked potent in front of goal of late.

Verdict: We are backing the away win at odds of 1/3 and/or over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 4/6. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
