A 2-0 win at Celta Vigo at the weekend means that Atletico have now kept three straight clean sheets. That could be important against Bayern’s current prolific team.

Defensive solidity has normally been a strength of Los Colchoneros under the highly-rated Simeone. However, despite the recent addition of Luis Suarez from Barcelona, the visitors have scored just two goals in their last three outings. To be fair to the Uruguayan, he has scored three times in just four appearances for the Atletico.

The Spanish team made the quarter-finals of the Champions League last season, only to suffered elimination at the quarter-final stage against RB Leipzig. A record of just two wins in their last six games in the Champions League is a poor one for a team that has proven so strong in the past.

Atletico have also struggled for wins on their travels over 90 minutes, as Simeone’s team has won just once in their last seven away games. It will be a big task to change that stat against the European champions.

Atletico Madrid are likely to be stubborn opponents for Bayern Munich. However, we are backing the reigning champions to get their title defence off to a winning start.
