Prediction and odds for the game: Bayern Munich (1/2) v Atletico Madrid (19/4)

We are backing the home win at odds of 1/2

When: Wednesday, 21st October 2020, Kick-off 20:00

Where: The Allianz Arena

In one of the matches of gameweek one of the Champions League, Bayern Munich host Atletico Madrid at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern Munich

The reigning European champions will once again be one of the teams to beat in this seasons Champions League. Last season Hansi Flick’s were just a cut above most opponents they faced in Europe’s elite competition.

This season they have made another solid start to the campaign, with the only fly in the ointment so far a shock 4-1 defeat by Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga. However, the Bavarians have won all their other games in the German top-flight with relative ease. They head into this game on the back of a 4-1 hammering of newly promoted Arminia Bielefeld.

As you would expect of European champions, Bayern Munich have an impressive recent record in the Champions League. In fact, last season the German giants won all 11 of their matches on the way to lifting the trophy. They have also lost just once in their last 20 games in the competition. They truly are a formidable team.

Die Bayern’s recent home record in Europe’s elite competition is also an impressive one, as they have won six of their last seven games at the Allianz Arena, while also scoring at least six goals in all of the wins.

Atletico Madrid

Diego Simeone’s team have enjoyed a rather inconsistent start to their season so far, but are unbeaten in four games heading to Bavaria. A 2-0 win at Celta Vigo at the weekend means that Atletico have now kept three straight clean sheets. That could be important against Bayern’s current prolific team.

Defensive solidity has normally been a strength of Los Colchoneros under the highly-rated Simeone. However, despite the recent addition of Luis Suarez from Barcelona, the visitors have scored just two goals in their last three outings. To be fair to the Uruguayan, he has scored three times in just four appearances for the Atletico.

The Spanish team made the quarter-finals of the Champions League last season, only to suffered elimination at the quarter-final stage against RB Leipzig. A record of just two wins in their last six games in the Champions League is a poor one for a team that has proven so strong in the past.

Atletico have also struggled for wins on their travels over 90 minutes, as Simeone’s team has won just once in their last seven away games. It will be a big task to change that stat against the European champions.

Conclusion

Atletico Madrid are likely to be stubborn opponents for Bayern Munich. However, we are backing the reigning champions to get their title defence off to a winning start. The other bet we are recommending is to back under 2.5 goals scored. This is based on the fact that Atletico’s main strength is in defence and they are capable of frustrating teams.

Verdict: We are backing the Bayern win at odds of 1/2 and/or under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 6/5. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
