Prediction and odds for the game: Southampton (5/6) v Newcastle (16/5)
We are backing the home win
When: Friday, 6th November 2020, Kick-off 20:00
Where: St Marys’ Stadium
On Friday night, Southampton host Newcastle at St Mary’s, as the home side look to continue their superb recent run of form in the Premier League.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team head into this game on the back of a five-game unbeaten run in the English top-flight, having recorded four wins in the process. A key to the Saints recent good form has been their brilliant attacking efforts, as the team from the south coast has now scored at least two goals in their last four league outings.
Captain James Ward-Prowse has hit the goal trail of late, scoring three goals in his last two Saints appearances. Star striker Danny Ings also scored his fifth league goal of the Premier League campaign in a 4-3 win at Aston Villa last time out. It was not all good news though, as the 28-year-old picked up a knee injury that could rule him out of this clash.
The team from the south coast have been in good recent form in the league on home soil, winning four of their last six games league matches at St Marys, while scoring at least twice in their last four home matches in the Premier League.
Steve Bruce’s team are experiencing another steady Premier League campaign after making themselves difficult to beat. A 2-1 win over Everton in their last outing means that the Magpies have lost just once in their previous five league outings. Summer signing Callum Wilson took his league goal tally to six goals in seven matches with a brace last time out.
Although Newcastle’s games are not always high-scoring, both teams have scored in their last five matches in the English top-flight. That has contributed to Newcastle keeping just one clean sheet in their previous eight Premier League matches.
Newcastle have a mixed recent away record in the English top-flight, winning just one of their last six games on their travels. However, 1-1 draws at Tottenham and Wolves in their last two away matches mean that Bruce’s are also undefeated in four games away from home in the English top-flight. The Magpies recent away games in the Premier League have been low-scoring with under 2.5 goals scored in their last four games.
Southampton have been in superb form of late, but the possible absence of striker Danny Ings could have a big effect on the way the game goes. Newcastle have been a stubborn opponent that does not make it easy for their opponents. However, we are backing the home win, although we believe it could be a low-scoring encounter, so we are also recommending under 2.5 goals scored.
Verdict: We are backing the home win at odds of 5/6 and/or under 2.5 goals at evens. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
