Prediction and odds for the game: Arsenal (4/9) vs Newcastle (13/2)

We are backing under 2.5 goals scored at evens

When: Monday, 18th January 2021, Kick-off 20:00

Where: The Emirates Stadium

On Monday night, Arsenal host Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium, as the home side look to continue their recent good run in the Premier League.

Arsenal

Mikel Arteta’s team are unbeaten in four Premier League games, having recorded three wins in the process. The Gunners have also kept three straight clean sheets in the English top-flight. Last time out, Arsenal needed extra-time to see-off Monday night’s opponents in the FA Cup third round, eventually recording a 2-0 win.

Arsenal’s recent decent run of form moved them up to 11th place in the table. However, the team from north London are still eight points adrift of the Champions League spots. On the flip-side, they have at least moved 12 points clear of the relegation zone.

The Gunners have won just one of their last seven league matches at the Emirates Stadium. However, they are unbeaten in three games on home soil, as they have drawn two and won one of their last three home matches in the English top-flight.

Arsenal have a good recent record against Newcastle, losing just one of their previous 18 meetings with the Magpies in all competitions.

Newcastle

Steve Bruce’s team has a poor recent record in the Premier League, failing to win in six league games, suffering four defeats in the process. Last time out in the top-flight the visitors suffered a 1-0 defeat at bottom club Sheffield United after the first-half dismissal of Ryan Fraser. That the defeat came after the FA Cup third-round exit at Arsenal.

The visitor’s style of football has been criticised by their fans. Those criticisms are understandable considering that only the league’s bottom four have scored fewer than Newcastle’s goal tally of 18 goals. Newcastle’s lack of firepower has contributed to four of their last five league games producing under 2.5 goals scored.

The Magpies have a poor recent away record in the Premier League, winning just one of their last seven league outings on their travels. The defeat at Sheffield United in their last away match in the top-flight means that Newcastle have lost four of their last five games on the road.

They have failed to score in three of their last five away matches in the English top-flight. The north east team have also failed to find the net on their previous five visits to the Emirates Stadium.

Conclusion

Arsenal have improved of late, but are still slightly unconvincing. However, we believe that the Gunners will record a narrow victory, but it will be a tight, low-scoring affair. Therefore, we are also backing under 2.5 goals scored at evens.

Verdict: We are backing under 2.5 goals scored at evens and/or the home win at odds of 4/9. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
