Prediction and odds for the game: Wolves (11/8) vs Southampton (21/10)

We are backing the home win

When: Thursday, 11th February 2021, Kick-off 17:30

Where: Molineux Stadium

On Thursday evening, Wolves host Southampton at Molineux Stadium in the FA Cup fifth round, with both teams eying a place in the semi-finals.

Wolves

The team from the Midlands have not been in great form this season. However, they have taken four points from their last two Premier League games. Nuno Espirito Santo’s team has also lost just one of their last five matches in all competitions.

The home sides most recent games have mostly been low-scoring affairs, with under 2.5 goals scored in four of their last five games in all competitions.

Wolves record in the FA Cup has been mixed of late. They made the semi-finals of the competition in 2019 but then suffered a 3-2 extra-time loss to Watford. Last season they only made it as far as the fourth round, when they suffered a 1-0 defeat by Manchester United.

This season Wolves have seen off Crystal Palace and non-league Chorley in the last round of the competition. Their most recent games in the grand old competition have been low-scoring, which is not surprising considering that Wolves games have generally been tight affairs in recent seasons.

The home side is unbeaten in five games on home soil against Southampton in all competitions. They will be confident of continuing that good record against the Saints.

Southampton

The Saints head to the Midlands in poor form. A 3-2 defeat at Newcastle last time out means that the team from the south coast team have lost their last four games in all competitions. A poor defensive record has been a key factor in those poor recent results, as they have conceded at least two goals in three of those four straight defeats.

Another concerning issue for the Saints is their recent away form, as the visitors have failed to win in five matches on their travels, losing their last three away matches.

Southampton have a mixed recent record in the FA Cup, winning just three of their last eight matches in the competition, two of those victories have been this season. They have beaten Shrewsbury Town and Arsenal, but both wins came at St Marys. The Saints have failed to win in their previous three away games in the FA Cup, suffering two defeats in the process.

Conclusion

Neither team has been in great form, but Wolves have shown signs of recovery of late. We are backing the home team to win this one, as the visitors look short of confidence and are there for the taking. The other bet we are backing is under 2.5 goals scored, as neither team are prolific at the moment and could struggle to find the net once again.

Verdict: We are backing the home win at odds of 11/8 and/or under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 4/6. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
