Prediction and odds for the game: England (8/11) vs Denmark (17/4)

We are backing the home win

When: Wednesday, 7th July 2021, Kick-off 20:00

Where: Wembley

On Wednesday night, England and Denmark go head-to-head at Wembley for the chance of appearing in the Euro 2020 final.

England

Not only are England now the favourites to progress to the final of Euro 2020, but they are also the favourites to lift the trophy. There are big expectations on the Three Lions to end their 55 years wait for a second international trophy. It would be hard to write off Gareth Southgate’s team on the evidence of their Euro 2020 campaign so far.

After a slow start to Euro 2020, England have grown into the tournament and their performances seem to have improved game on game. A 4-0 win over Ukraine in the last eight was their best performance so far at Euro 2020.

Gareth Southgate is regarded as a pragmatic head coach. However, pragmatism can be useful in tournament football. A record of five clean sheets in as many games during Euro 2020 has certainly not hindered the Three Lions that’s for sure.

The England head coach has some difficult decisions ahead. The main one is the likely return of Bukayo Saka in place of the lively Jadon Sancho. This move would be designed to negate the threat of dangerous Denmark wing-back Joachim Maehle, as Saka is better defensively than Sancho.

Denmark

Likely England, Denmark starting Euro 2020 in a slow manner, losing both their opening matches. However, since a 4-1 win over Russia in their final group game they have looked impressive. The Scandinavians have proven their quality in wins over Wales and last time out the Czech Republic. However, it is fair to say that the current England team are a step from their most recent opponents.

Kasper Hjulmand’s team has been prolific in front of goal of late, scoring at least two goals in their last three outings at Euro 2020. Nice forward Kasper Dolberg has found the net three times in his last two appearances. The 23-year-old is likely to keep his place in the starting line-up, despite the return from injury of RB Leipzig’s Yussuf Poulsen.

Although Denmark are underdogs to progress, they seem to have a great spirit and togetherness in their squad, even if they are playing without their midfield talisman Christian Eriksen.

Conclusion

While it is understandable that England are the favourites to win this game, Denmark is not the sort of team to make life easy for their opponents. They have spirit and more importantly quality within their ranks. However, we believe that the Three Lions will record a narrow win, in what could be a close and low-scoring encounter. The home advantage could just make the difference for Southgate’s team.

Prediction: We are backing the home win at odds of 8/11 and/or under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 8/13. (All odds are taken from Bet365)
