Prediction and odds for the game: Chelsea (11/10) v Liverpool (2/1)
We are backing the home win
When: Tuesday 3rd March 2020, kick-off 7:45 PM
Where: Stamford Bridge
On Tuesday night, Chelsea host Liverpool at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup fifth round, as two of the Premier League’s top teams go head-to-head.
Frank Lampard’s team have been highly inconsistent in recent months. A 2-2 draw at relegation-threatened Bournemouth last time out means that the Blues have won just one of their last five matches and two of their last two games in all competitions.
A common theme of late for the home side has been conceding too many goals, as they have now conceded at least twice in five of their last seven competitive outings. On the flip-side, the Blues have also scored at least twice in five of their last seven games in all competitions.
Chelsea have a decent recent record in the FA Cup, suffering just one defeat in their last 13 outings while recording seven victories in their last nine matches in 90 minutes.
The Blues have a good recent home record in this competition, winning six of their last seven matches in the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have failed to win any of their last three meetings with Liverpool in all competitions. However, they had previous went five games unbeaten against the Merseysider’s. Boss Frank Lampard is likely to name a strong team to end that poor record and make it to the next round.
The Reds suffered a 3-0 defeat at struggling Watford last time out to end a run of 44 games undefeated in the Premier League. The loss was also their second in three games, having also suffered a 1-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last-16 first leg in Madrid.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has never really taken this competition seriously, usually rotating his squad. The former Dortmund boss is likely to do the same in this game but is likely to field a slightly stronger team than he has in the previous rounds of the competition. The fact that the Reds have won just four of their last 11 matches in the FA Cup illustrates that this competition is definitely not a priority for Klopp and his team.
The visitors famously beat neighbours Everton 1-0 at Anfield with a young team before needing a replay to see-off Shrewsbury in the fourth round.
Chelsea have been unconvincing, but if Liverpool fields a weakened team then the Blues should have too much quality for the Reds second string. That is why we are backing a home win. We are also backing the over 2.5 goals scored, as neither defence has been great in recent games and the attacking players on display could punish errors.
Verdict: We are backing the home win at odds of 11/10 and/or the under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 7/10. (All odds are taken from Bet365).[geosnippet id=3620]
