Prediction and odds for the game: Newcastle (10/1) vs Liverpool (2/7)

We are backing the away win

When: Wednesday, 30th December 2020, Kick-off 20:00

Where: St. James Park

On Wednesday night, Newcastle host Liverpool at St. James Park in the Premier League, as the visitors look to extend their lead at the top of the table.

Newcastle

The Magpies are enduring another poor Premier League campaign and currently sit 14th place in the table. However, Steve Bruce’s team are seven points clear of the relegation zone despite heavy criticism from the Toon Army of late.

The home team have failed to win in three league games, having suffered two defeats in the process. A 2-0 defeat at Manchester City last time out also means that they have won just two of their last seven league games. The team from the north east have a poor defensive record in the English top-flight, keeping just one clean sheet in their last 13 Premier League outings.

The Magpies have a poor recent home record in the English top-flight, having won just three of their last 11 league matches at St. James Park.

England international striker Callum Wilson was left out of the starting line-up for the City defeat. However, the former-Bournemouth is likely to start in this clash and will be looking to add to his eight goals and four assists in the Premier League this season.

Liverpool

The visitors are top of the table but are only three points clear of second-place Leicester and third place arch-rivals Everton. Jurgen Klopp’s team are 11 league games unbeaten, having recorded six wins and five draws. Last time out, struggling West Brom held the reigning English champions to a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

The Merseysider’s have a mixed recent away record in the Premier League, as although they are unbeaten in five matches on their travels, they have also won just one of their previous six away matches in the English top-flight. A 7-0 win at Crystal Palace in their last away match in the Premier League ended a five-game winless run on the road in the league for the Reds.

Liverpool’s injury crisis worsened last time out when they lost Cameroonian centre-back Joel Matip through a muscle injury. The defender is also a doubt for this clash. He could miss out through injury alongside Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Diogo Jota, Konstantinos Tsimikas and Thiago.

Conclusion

Newcastle have been poor at times this season and despite Liverpool’s injury-crisis, we expect the visitors to record a victory. The first bet recommendation is the away win. The other bet we are backing is Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino to be an anytime goalscorer. The Brazilian international has scored three times and produced one assist in his last three league appearances for the visitors.

Verdict: We are backing the away win at odds of 2/7 and/or Roberto Firmino to be an anytime goalscorer at odds of 13/10. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
