Prediction and odds for the game: Manchester City (4/11) vs Dortmund (15/2)

We are backing Manchester City half-time/full-time at odds of 20/21

When: Tuesday, 6th April 2021, Kick-off 20:00

Where: The Etihad Stadium

On Tuesday night, Manchester City host Dortmund at the Etihad Stadium, in the Champions League quarter-final first leg, as both teams look to establish a lead for the second leg.

Manchester City

The Citizens look to have returned to top form in recent months. A 2-0 win at Leicester last time out means that Pep Guardiola’s team has now on 26 of their last 27 matches in all competitions. The run has sent City clear at the top of the Premier League. While the English title seems almost certain at the moment, winning the Champions League could prove a much tougher ask.

However, City have a good recent record in European football’s elite competition, as they have won seven of their previous eight European matches. One facet of the home side’s play that has been a big factor is their defensive displays, as the Citizens have kept seven straight clean sheets in the Champions League. At the other end of the pitch, Guardiola’s team has also scored at least two goals in six of those of eight matches.

Dortmund

BVB could not face Manchester City at a worse time, as the German team have been in awful form of late. A 2-1 home defeat by Eintracht Frankfurt in their last outing means that the visitors have won just once in their last five matches in all competitions. The loss also put Edin Terzic’s team seven adrift of fourth-place Frankfurt in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Dortmund have had major defensive issues of late, as they have conceded at least two goals in four of their last five matches. With that defensive record against City’s prolific attack, everybody associated with the visitors must be fearing the worse for Tuesday night’s game.

The one positive for Dortmund in recent months has been their Champions League campaign. BVB are unbeaten in seven matches in the competition, having recorded five wins. However, it could be argued that they have not faced an elite opponent in that run of games. They only scraped past Sevilla 5-4 on aggregate in the last-16 too.

Dortmund have been pretty free-scoring in the competition of late, scoring at least two goals in four of their last five outings. Star striker Erling Haaland has played a big part in that prolific run, as the Norwegian star has scored ten times in Europe’s elite competition this season. The fact that former City winger Jadon Sancho will be missing is a blow to BVB, though.

Conclusion

We expect Manchester City to end Dortmund’s recent unbeaten run in the Champions League. The home win offers very little value, so we are instead backing City half-time/full-time. We are also backing Erling Haaland to add to his burgeoning goal tally in the Champions League this season.

Verdict: We are backing Manchester City half-time/full-time at odds of 20/21 and/or Erling Haaland anytime goalscorer at odds of 6/5. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
