West Bromwich Albion’s unlikely pursuit of Premier League survival continues as they prepare to meet Southampton on Monday Night Football.
West Bromwich Albion have been one of the worst teams in the league this season and we don’t think that’s a particularly controversial thing to say. They’ve had a few nice moments but they were always going to struggle after failing to really build themselves up during the summer after securing promotion. They’ve tried everything imaginable to improve their fortunes, but on the face of it, things aren’t looking good.
A 0-0 draw against Burnley followed by a 1-0 win over Brighton had many believing the Baggies could still be in the fight. Unfortunately they went on to lose to Crystal Palace and Everton, and they also drew with Newcastle, but they stunned a lot of fans last weekend by tearing through Chelsea in a shocking 5-2 win.
Southampton fans were pretty optimistic about what this season could look like for them before it began, but at this stage in proceedings, it’s clear to see that it’s been a bit of a disappointment. The summer transfer window will offer up a chance for them to reflect on what’s happened up to this point but in reality, there are going to be some notable issues that have to be resolved before they can even think about a top six push.
Consistency has been the biggest issue of all for this Southampton side and their recent form proves that. They lost to Everton then beat Sheffield United, only to be beaten by Manchester City and Brighton in a matter of days. A 3-0 win over Bournemouth got them through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup, and they went on to show a lot of heart in a 3-2 win against Burnley.
In a game where one team has more to play for than the other, there’s a good chance the team in question is going to get the job done – and that’s exactly why we think the Baggies will win this one. Sure, they may not have the quality necessary to really stretch their legs in the race for survival, but we like the fact they’re going to give it a good go. Southampton already seem to be on the beach and Sam Allardyce will be desperate to take the relegation battle right down to the wire.
In terms of an official scoreline prediction we’re going to go with 1-0 West Brom, ensuring we stick to the under 2.5 goals bracket.
Verdict: Back the home win at odds of 13/5 and the under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 4/5 (All odds are taken from bet365).[geosnippet id=3620]
