Tottenham vs Southampton Preview, prediction and odds

Prediction and odds for the game: Tottenham (4/5) vs Southampton (10/3)

We are backing the home win at odds of 4/5

When: Wednesday, 21st April 2021, kick-off 18:00

Where: The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

On Wednesday evening, Tottenham host Southampton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as the home team looks to enhance their chances of European football next season.

Jose Mourinho’s team have endured an inconsistent Premier League campaign. The team from north London now look like major outsiders for qualification for next season’s Champions League, as they are now five points behind fourth-place West Ham. A run of just one win in their last five Premier League outings has been the main reason for Spurs’ slipping away from the league’s top-four.

Poor defensive displays have played a big part in their recent poor results, as the home side has now conceded at least two goals in four of their last five league outings.

Spurs have a decent recent home record in the Premier League, as they have won three of their last four league games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. A 3-1 defeat by Manchester United in their last home league match ended a three-game winning run on home soil for the team from north London.

The Saints have been in poor form of late, as they have now lost three of their previous four Premier League outings. Despite their recent poor league form, the Saints are still nine points clear of the relegation zone, with two games in hand on 18th place Fulham.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team have been poor in defence of late, conceding at least two goals their last four league outings. Their recent defensive struggles may not come as a major surprise, as only 19th place West Brom have conceded more goals in the Premier League this season.

Southampton have been poor travellers of late in the English top-flight, as they have won just once in ten away games in the Premier League. In fact, the Saints have lost seven of their last eight league matches on their travels.

Unsurprisingly considering their recent poor away record, the Saints have struggled defensively of late away from home, as they have conceded at least two goals in six of their last eight league games on their travels. They have also failed to score in six of their last nine Premier League games on the road.

The Saints have a poor recent record against Tottenham, winning just one of the last five meetings while suffering three defeats in the process.

Tottenham been poor of late in the Premier League, but they meet a Southampton team low on morale and in poor form. We are backing Spurs to pull off the victory. The other bet we recommend is over 2.5 goals, as neither team can defend and Tottenham have the attacking talent to exploit any weaknesses in the Saints backline.

Verdict: We are backing the home win at odds of 4/5 and/or over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 8/11. (All odds are taken from Bet365)
