Everton vs Boreham Wood Preview, prediction and odds

Prediction and odds for the game: Everton (1/7) vs Boreham Wood (16/1)

We are backing Richarlison to be anytime goalscorer at odds of 5/6

When: Thursday 3 March 2022, Kick-off 20:15

Where: Goodison Park

On Thursday night, Premier League Everton host National League Boreham Wood at Goodison Park in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Although results have not gone their way of late, the atmosphere around Everton has completely changed for the better since the appointment of Frank Lampard as head coach. The Toffees controversially suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Manchester City last time out.

The team from Merseyside should have been awarded a penalty kick after a handball by City midfielder Rodri. The decision was checked by VAR and the Premier League have since apologised to the club for the mistake.

Lampard’s first game as Everton’s head coach was in the Toffees 3-0 win over Brentford at Goodison Park in the last round of this competition.

With the Toffees battling relegation, the FA Cup may not be their main focus. However, with some positive momentum gained from the positive performance against City, Lampard and co will be keen to produce another positive result and progress into the quarter-finals, in what looks like a big banana skin for the home team.

Everton have won five of their last six matches in the FA Cup, although they have needed extra time to win three of those games.

The visitors are chasing promotion to the football league, as they are currently in fourth place in the table, eight points behind Stockport County who are in the only automatic promotion spot. However, Lee Garrard’s have three games in hand on County. A play-off spot looks like a more realistic prospect.

The visitor’s recent form has been slightly inconsistent of late. Last time out they recorded a 1-0 win over Eastleigh, keeping their third clean sheet in four matches.

The recent clean sheets will not be a massive surprise, as Boreham Wood have by far the best defensive record in the National League. However, they are also the lowest scorers in the league’s top-11, so their games tend to be low-scoring.

Boreham Wood have won their last five matches in the FA Cup, without conceding a goal. They recorded an impressive 1-0 win at Championship Bournemouth last time out. A trip to a Premier League team will be a challenge and may just be a step too far for the non-league outfit.

Although Everton have endured some poor results of late, they are improving under Frank Lampard. We expect the Toffees to have enough quality to avoid a giant-killing. Backing the home wins is also pointless, such are the odds.

Instead, we are looking at the goals market. The first bet we are backing is Richarlison to be an anytime goalscorer. The Brazilian is the main attacking threat for the Toffees.

The other bet we are backing is a slight outside one, which is both teams to score. Although the visitors are not prolific, these FA Cup ties tend to bring out the best in the lower league teams, which is our main reason for that recommendation.

Our Tips: We are backing Richarlison to be an anytime goalscorer at odds of 5/6 and/or both teams to score at odds of 11/8. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
